World of Warcraft's upcoming housing system: A contrast to Final Fantasy XIV
Blizzard Entertainment has offered a sneak peek at the player housing feature coming to World of Warcraft (WoW) with the World of Warcraft: Midnight expansion, subtly contrasting its approach with that of Final Fantasy XIV. The WoW team highlighted accessibility as a key design principle.
In a recent developer blog, Blizzard emphasized "A Home for Everyone" as a primary goal. They stated that acquiring and maintaining a house will be straightforward, devoid of exorbitant costs, lotteries, or harsh penalties for lapsed subscriptions. Unlike some other MMOs, there's no risk of repossession.
Player housing in WoW will function as expected: players purchase and personalize homes, which can then be visited by others. This contrasts with Final Fantasy XIV's system, renowned for its player creativity (resulting in in-game creations like theaters, nightclubs, and museums) but also infamous for its limited plots, high Gil costs, lottery system, and potential for house demolition due to inactivity.
WoW aims to address these concerns. Housing is shared within a Warband, allowing characters of different factions and races to access the same home, even if they couldn't purchase it individually. While a Human character can't buy a house in a Horde zone, a Troll character within their Warband can, providing access for all Warband members.
While WoW's housing will initially be limited to two zones with "Neighborhoods" of approximately 50 plots each, these are instanced and offer both public and private options. Public areas are server-managed and dynamically generated, meaning the potential number of Neighborhoods isn't currently capped.
Blizzard has expressed a long-term commitment to WoW's housing system, outlining goals that include "boundless self-expression," "deeply social" interactions, and a "long-lasting journey" with ongoing updates and expansions. This suggests an awareness of the pitfalls experienced by other MMOs with similar features.
Further details are expected closer to the summer reveal of World of Warcraft: Midnight.
