Nintendo Switch 2: Genki's CES Mockup Reveals Key Features
Genki, a prominent handheld gaming accessory developer, showcased a 3D-printed Nintendo Switch 2 mockup at CES 2025, unveiling several key features. This model, reportedly based on a black market acquisition, accurately reflects the console's dimensions, revealing a design shift towards a larger form factor, reminiscent of the Valve Steam Deck.
Key features observed include seemingly magnetic Joy-Cons, a second USB-C port, and an intriguing new "C" button. Genki CEO Eddie Tsai confirmed the magnetic Joy-Con design in an interview with The Verge. The SL and SR buttons utilize magnets, detached via a pin mechanism activated by a large button on each Joy-Con. Despite the change from sliding rails, Tsai assures users of secure Joy-Con attachment during gameplay.
Enhanced Joy-Con Functionality:
The Switch 2's Joy-Con mounting channels incorporate optical sensors, hinting at potential new functionality. This aligns with leaked images showing what appear to be optical sensors on the new controllers. A potential accessory, possibly magnetically attached via the SL/SR buttons, could enable mouse-like functionality.
Compatibility Concerns:
While the Switch 2 is slim enough to physically fit within the existing Switch dock, design modifications prevent compatibility. The console's dimensions have been altered to accommodate the new features.
Unanswered Questions:
The purpose of the additional USB-C port and the mysterious "C" button remains unclear. Genki currently lacks information regarding their functionality.
