Borderlands 4's enhancements to its loot and co-op systems were a major topic at PAX East 2025. Dive into the details of these updates and discover why the game opts out of a mini-map.
Borderlands 4 PAX East Panel
Gearbox Software, the developer behind Borderlands 4 (BL4), unveiled significant upgrades to the game's loot and co-op features during PAX East 2025 on May 10. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, along with other team members, detailed these enhancements to an eager audience.
Building on feedback from Borderlands 3 (BL3), Gearbox has refined the co-op experience in BL4. The new lobby system simplifies connectivity, allowing players to join and leave at any time without needing to reach specific points in the game. Fast-travel has been optimized, enabling players to quickly join their friends anywhere on BL4's expansive map. The level-scaling system, similar to BL3, ensures that players can seamlessly join any session and their characters will scale to match the world's level. This system also extends to loot, with each player having their own pool of rewards.
Regarding loot, BL4 aims to streamline the complexity of item combinations to prevent player overwhelm. The frequency of legendary item drops will be reduced, but each drop will feel more impactful and special. Not all loot will be randomized; specific drops from mini-bosses and major enemies ensure that defeating these foes feels rewarding. Players can also grind through Moxxi’s Big Encore, allowing mission and boss replays without needing to reload previous saves to farm loot.
Mini-Map Removal Explained
During the PAX East 2025 panel, fans inquired about the absence of a mini-map in BL4, given the game's vast world. Randy Pitchford explained that they wanted players to experience the game directly, rather than navigating through a mini-map. He said, "We made a big freaking world, and a lot of the things you do can be local space, but a lot of the things you do or want to do are out there, and a local space map is not a good way to navigate when you're thinking about objectives and opportunities - several at the same time that might be miles away - and a compass really helps us do that."
Pitchford emphasized that he wants players to engage with the game's world, not just its map. The new compass system is designed to guide players through their adventures across the expansive landscape. He encouraged fans to "play the game first and understand the choices we've made, and I think you'll see and understand when you realise how big this world is and how playing the game in the world is better than playing the map."
As Gearbox gears up for the launch of Borderlands 4, they feel confident in their progress. Following the Borderlands 4 State of Play and the announcement of an earlier release date, the studio plans to participate in several events like Fan Fest, Bilibili World, and Gamescom to further showcase BL4's features.
Borderlands 4 is slated for release on September 12, 2025, and will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Stay tuned for more updates on this highly anticipated game.
