Bethesda's Starfield initially featured planned gore and dismemberment mechanics, but technical limitations forced their removal. Dennis Mejillones, a former character artist who worked on Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Starfield, explained to Kiwi Talkz that the complexity of integrating these mechanics with the game's space suits proved insurmountable.
The intricate design of the suits, including helmets and various attachments, created significant technical challenges. Mejillones described the resulting system as a "big rat's nest" due to the numerous factors that needed to be accounted for, such as helmet removal, flesh rendering beneath the suit, and the impact of customizable body sizes.
While some fans expressed disappointment over the absence of gore and dismemberment—features present in Fallout 4—Mejillones argued that these mechanics are more fitting for Fallout's humorous tone. He stated that the gore in Fallout contributes to the game's overall playful atmosphere.
Launched in September 2023, Starfield has already attracted over 15 million players. IGN's 7/10 review highlighted the game's expansive RPG elements and satisfying combat as key strengths, despite various challenges.
Recently, another former Bethesda developer voiced surprise at Starfield's extensive loading times, particularly noticeable in Neon. Since its release, Bethesda has implemented improvements, including a 60fps performance mode. The Shattered Space expansion also launched in September.
