Today marks a special milestone as *Bloodborne* celebrates its 10th anniversary, and fans are commemorating the occasion with another vibrant "Return to Yharnam" community event. FromSoftware's acclaimed PlayStation 4 title, released on March 24, 2015, not only solidified the studio's reputation as a leading developer but also garnered widespread critical and commercial success. Given its impact, many anticipated a sequel or at least a remaster akin to the Dark Souls series. However, a decade later, there has been no official follow-up or enhancement from Sony, leaving fans puzzled and vocal about their desire for more *Bloodborne*.
Earlier this year, some insight into this silence came to light. Following his departure from Sony, PlayStation icon Shuhei Yoshida shared his thoughts on the matter during an interview with Kinda Funny Games. Yoshida emphasized that his comments were purely speculative and not based on insider knowledge. He suggested that Hidetaka Miyazaki, the visionary behind FromSoftware and *Bloodborne*, might be hesitant to let anyone else handle his beloved creation due to his busy schedule and success with projects like *Elden Ring*. Yoshida speculated that Sony respects Miyazaki's stance, which might explain the absence of a remaster or sequel.Miyazaki, who has been at the helm of FromSoftware's major successes post-Bloodborne, including Dark Souls 3, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and the blockbuster Elden Ring, has often sidestepped questions about Bloodborne in interviews, citing FromSoftware's lack of ownership over the IP. However, he did acknowledge in February of last year that the game could benefit from modern hardware.
In the absence of official updates, the community has taken matters into their own hands. Modders have attempted to enhance the Bloodborne experience, but Sony has responded firmly. Notably, Lance McDonald, who created a popular 60fps mod, received a DMCA takedown notice from Sony Interactive Entertainment in January, four years after the mod's release. Similarly, Lilith Walther, known for Nightmare Kart and the Bloodborne PSX demake, faced copyright claims on old YouTube videos.
Meanwhile, tech enthusiasts using PS4 emulators have achieved what could be seen as a fan-made remaster. The team at Digital Foundry showcased a video detailing a breakthrough in PS4 emulation through ShadPS4, enabling Bloodborne to run at a smooth 60fps on PC. This development may have prompted Sony's recent actions against fan-made projects, though the company has not responded to inquiries from IGN.
With no official word on a Bloodborne remaster or sequel, fans have taken it upon themselves to keep the spirit alive. The latest "Return to Yharnam" event, starting today on the game's 10th anniversary, encourages players to start fresh characters, engage in co-op and PvP, and share in-game messages to signal their participation in this community-driven celebration.
As fans continue to rally around Bloodborne, these community events may become the enduring legacy of their love for the game.
