The Bloodborne PSX demake, a fan-made project, has recently faced a copyright claim, marking it the latest in a series of actions against Bloodborne-related fan creations. This follows the takedown of the popular Bloodborne 60fps mod by its creator, Lance McDonald, who received a notice from Sony Interactive Entertainment last week to remove links to his patch.
Lilith Walther, the creator behind Nightmare Kart (formerly Bloodborne Kart) and the visually striking Bloodborne PSX demake, took to Twitter to report that a YouTube video showcasing the demake was hit with a copyright claim by MarkScan Enforcement, a company hired by Sony Interactive Entertainment. McDonald confirmed that MarkScan was also responsible for the DMCA notice against his 60fps patch, raising questions about Sony's motives.
Bloodborne, developed by FromSoftware and released on the PS4, has been a point of contention in the gaming community due to the lack of updates or remasters from Sony. Fans have been vocal about their desire for a next-gen patch to boost the game's frame rate to 60fps, as well as calls for a remaster or a sequel. Recent advancements in PS4 emulation, highlighted by Digital Foundry's coverage of ShadPS4, have allowed players to experience Bloodborne at 60fps on PC, potentially prompting Sony's aggressive stance.
Amidst these developments, McDonald speculated that Sony's actions could be a precursor to an official announcement of a 60fps Bloodborne remake. He suggested that Sony might be clearing the online space to avoid conflicts with fan projects when searching for terms like "Bloodborne 60fps" or "Bloodborne remake."
However, Sony has not provided any official indication of plans to revisit Bloodborne. Shuhei Yoshida, a former PlayStation executive, shared his theory that FromSoftware's director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, might be hesitant to let others handle a project he deeply values, despite recognizing the potential benefits of updating the game for modern hardware.
As it stands, Bloodborne remains untouched nearly a decade after its initial release, leaving fans hopeful but uncertain about its future.
