Fans of *Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2* are thrilled as the developer, Saber Interactive, has empowered modders by releasing its internal editor, sparking optimism that the game could enjoy a long-lasting life similar to *Skyrim* through user-generated content. Game director Dmitry Grigorenko shared this exciting news on the Space Marine 2 modding Discord, marking it as a significant milestone in supporting the modding community.
Saber Interactive has made the official Integration Studio available to the public, the very tool used internally for all aspects of gameplay development. This initial release empowers modders to work on everything from level scenarios and game modes to AI behavior, abilities, melee combo logic, user interface, and HUD elements, streamlining the modding process for *Space Marine 2*.
“Not long ago, I promised we would support the modding scene — and we meant it,” Grigorenko stated. “Watching this community grow, push boundaries, and create incredible experiences has been both inspiring and humbling. We’re excited to see what you build next — whether it’s a cinematic campaign, wild new game mode, or something we never saw coming.”
To kickstart the creative process, Grigorenko playfully shared concept art for a "Fishing With Daddy Calgar" mini-game, hinting at the possibilities now open to modders. Marneus Calgar, the leader of the Ultramarines, could be seen in a new light with these tools at hand.
To understand what the modding community has in store, I spoke with Tom, known as *Warhammer Workshop*, the modder behind *Space Marine 2’s excellent Astartes Overhaul*. Having recently released a mod enabling 12-player co-op in *Space Marine 2*, Tom now has access to all the scripting tools that govern mission dynamics and various game components like weapons and abilities.
With these tools, modders can create innovative experiences such as a *Space Marine 2* roguelite mode, where players start with just a combat knife and face increasingly challenging enemies. “Killing a Carnifex might grant you a Heavy Bolter,” Tom suggested, illustrating the potential depth of such mods.
While a new cinematic campaign centered around Chaos is feasible, Tom noted that creating cutscenes is more complex due to limited access to animation tools. However, he is currently working on introducing new factions like the Tau and Necrons, leveraging existing rigs to fit these additions. Meanwhile, the community is eager to rise to Grigorenko's challenge of developing the "Fishing With Daddy Calgar" mini-game mod.
The reaction from *Space Marine 2* fans has been overwhelmingly positive. Although the game is well-received and one of the best-selling Warhammer video games, its official content is limited to three factions: Space Marines, Chaos, and the Tyrannids. The community had hoped for DLC to expand the faction roster, especially after the campaign teased the Necrons. Now, with the editor in hand, fans can expand the game themselves.
“This is how you keep a game alive for years like Skyrim,” commented redditor Mortwight, highlighting the potential longevity of *Space Marine 2* through modding.
This development is particularly noteworthy given Saber and publisher Focus Entertainment’s recent announcement of *Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3*. Some fans expressed concerns about the future of *Space Marine 2* DLC, but both Saber and Focus have assured they are not abandoning the game. With the modding community now equipped with the editor, *Space Marine 2* is set for an extended lifespan.
