An internal leak has exposed Sony's experiments with AI-driven character technology for PlayStation. A reportedly confidential video showcased Horizon's Aloy demonstrating advanced conversational AI capabilities before being swiftly removed from YouTube.
Behind Sony's AI Character Prototype
The Verge obtained footage showing PlayStation Studios' technical demo featuring an AI-powered version of Horizon's protagonist Aloy. The demo was reportedly developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment's advanced technology group in collaboration with Guerrilla Games.
The video's subsequent takedown following a copyright claim from Sony-linked enforcement firm Muso lends credibility to its authenticity. When contacted by IGN, Sony declined to comment on the leaked material.
In the demonstration, director of software engineering Sharwin Raghoebardajal conversed with the AI Aloy using a multimodal system combining:
- OpenAI's Whisper for speech recognition
- GPT-4 and Llama 3 for dialogue processing
- Sony's proprietary Emotional Voice Synthesis (EVS)
- Mockingbird technology for facial animation
The Uncanny Valley of AI Aloy
The demo revealed both the potential and current limitations of AI gaming companions. While able to maintain coherent conversations about Horizon's storyline, the synthetic Aloy exhibited robotic vocal delivery and stiff facial animations - far removed from Ashly Burch's iconic performance.
Particularly jarring moments occurred when Raghoebardajal controlled Aloy in-game while simultaneously conversing with her AI counterpart. The demonstration notably used Horizon's clone narrative premise while showcasing artificial character replication.
The AI Arms Race in Gaming
While Sony hasn't confirmed plans to implement this technology commercially, the leak aligns with broader industry trends:
- Microsoft's development of Muse AI for game design
- EA declaring AI as central to future development
- Capcom testing generative AI for environmental design
PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash previously emphasized AI's role in meeting younger gamers' expectations for personalized experiences: "NPCs could interact with players based on their actions, making it feel more personal for Gen Z and Alpha audiences."
However, the technology faces significant hurdles, as demonstrated by Keywords Studios' failed AI-only game experiment and backlash against AI-generated Call of Duty assets. The gaming community remains divided over AI's creative limitations and ethical implications.
Sony's demo appears focused on internal R&D rather than imminent product integration, with Raghoebardajal noting: "This is just a glimpse of what is possible." The prototype suggests PlayStation's interest in AI companions, though current technical constraints and creative concerns may delay practical implementation.
