Xbox chief Phil Spencer has provided more details on the company's choice to release Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, a major title that was previously exclusive to Xbox platforms, on Sony's PlayStation console.
Xbox Explains Why Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Is Coming to PS5
Multiplatform Launch Supports Xbox's Broader Strategy

At the Gamescom 2024 showcase yesterday, Bethesda surprised audiences by announcing that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, initially planned as an Xbox and PC exclusive, will also launch on PlayStation 5 in spring 2025. Xbox head Phil Spencer addressed the move at a press event, stating that making the game multiplatform is a strategic step aligned with Xbox's overall business objectives.
In an interview, Spencer explained that as a business, Xbox faces high expectations from parent company Microsoft. "It's definitely true inside of Microsoft that the performance bar is set high for us—we’re expected to deliver strong results because we receive significant support from the company," he said. He also emphasized Xbox’s focus on learning and evolving from earlier initiatives.
"When we announced our PlayStation releases last spring, we launched four games—two on Nintendo Switch, and all four on PlayStation—and said we would observe and learn from the outcome," Spencer noted. "By the time of our showcase, I indicated that based on what we learned, we plan to do more." Despite taking major titles multiplatform, Spencer added that Xbox as a platform remains robust, with player counts hitting record highs and franchises continuing to expand.

"What I see is that our franchises are becoming more popular. Our Xbox console player base is as large this year as it’s ever been," Spencer remarked. "Player numbers are climbing on the console platform, our franchises remain strong, and we’re running a healthy business."
Spencer also pointed out the importance of Xbox staying adaptable in a shifting industry. "There’s a lot of pressure on the gaming sector. After years of growth, companies are seeking new ways to expand. As gamers ourselves, we should expect further changes in how games are developed and distributed." He stated that the ultimate aim must be "better games that reach more players," adding that if Xbox isn't prioritizing that, "we’re focused on the wrong objectives." "For us, the health of Xbox, our platform, and our expanding portfolio of games are what matter most," Spencer concluded.
FTC Documents Show Indy Was Originally Intended for Multiple Platforms

Rumors had circulated for some time that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle would release on a competing console, even before the official announcement. Speculation about first-party Xbox titles going multiplatform emerged earlier this year, but this marks the first major confirmation involving a high-profile release like Indiana Jones. Prior to this, Spencer had publicly stated that neither Indiana Jones nor Starfield would be among the Xbox exclusives coming to PlayStation. Now, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle appears to join a growing list of major Xbox titles set to arrive on PS5, following announcements like Doom: The Dark Ages in June.

Discussions about Indiana Jones and the Great Circle shifting from Xbox-exclusive to multiplatform can be traced back to Microsoft's 2020 acquisition of ZeniMax Media, Bethesda’s parent company. During last year’s FTC trial concerning Xbox’s purchase of Activision, Bethesda executive Pete Hines testified that Disney originally contracted ZeniMax to develop the game for multiple consoles based on the Indiana Jones film series. After the acquisition, the terms were revised to limit the game's release to Xbox and PC. The latest decision to bring the game to PS5 reflects a renewed strategic shift for Xbox.
Internal emails from 2021 revealed that Spencer and other Xbox leaders considered the consequences of restricting Indiana Jones to Xbox. Spencer reportedly recognized that while exclusivity had certain advantages, it could also constrain the overall reach of Bethesda's releases.
