"Nintendo Switch 2 Direct: Top 7 Shocking Reveals"

Author : Scarlett Update:May 02,2025

Announcements of new video game hardware can often feel like a familiar script, with each new generation promising better graphics, faster load times, and innovative spins on iconic franchises, such as those featuring a certain plumber and his reptilian foes. Nintendo has consistently delivered these upgrades across its platforms, from the N64's analog controller to the tiny GameCube discs, the motion-sensing Wii, the Wii U's tablet screen, and the portable power of the Switch. Now, with the Switch 2, Nintendo continues this tradition while also introducing some surprising features.

It's 2025 and we finally get online play

As a lifelong Nintendo fan, my journey began when I was just four years old in 1983, dodging footballs thrown by my babysitter in a playful mimicry of Donkey Kong’s barrel-throwing antics. This deep-rooted love for Nintendo makes it bittersweet to discuss the latest reveal: the Switch 2's online capabilities. Historically, Nintendo has struggled to match the seamless online experiences provided by Sony and Xbox, often requiring cumbersome workarounds like separate apps for voice chat on the original Switch.

However, the Switch 2 Direct unveiled a game-changer: GameChat. This feature promises a robust four-player chat system with noise suppression, video camera support for face-to-face interaction, and screen sharing across consoles. This allows players to monitor multiple games at once within a single interface. Additionally, the new accessibility features page for the Switch 2 highlights GameChat's support for text-to-voice and voice-to-text, enhancing communication options for all players. While a unified matchmaking system remains to be seen, GameChat is a significant leap forward, potentially signaling the end of the notorious friend code system.

Miyazaki is bringing new blood exclusively to Nintendo

The first glimpse of the trailer for The Duskbloods had me fooled into thinking it was Bloodborne 2, with its unmistakable FROM Software aesthetic. Thanks to Eric Van Allen at IGN, it was confirmed that this is a new multiplayer PvPvE game directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, the mastermind behind many challenging and acclaimed titles. It's astonishing to think Miyazaki found time to craft an exclusive for Nintendo, given his relentless work ethic. Fans can anticipate another masterpiece from the studio that rarely misses the mark.

A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one

In another unexpected twist, Masuhiro Sakurai, renowned for directing Super Smash Bros., has shifted his focus to a new Kirby game. This news was as surprising as it was delightful. The original Kirby's Air Ride for the GameCube was visually appealing but lacked the fun factor. With Sakurai's known passion for Kirby and his proven track record, fans can expect a more polished and enjoyable experience in this upcoming title.

Control issues

The announcement of the Pro Controller 2 for the Switch 2 might have seemed minor, but it brought significant improvements. The addition of an audio jack—a feature long overdue—and two new mappable buttons thrilled me. Customizable controls are a game-changer, enhancing the overall gaming experience.

No Mario?!

The absence of a new Mario game at the Switch 2 launch was a genuine shock. It appears the team behind Super Mario Odyssey has been quietly developing Donkey Kong Bananza, a 3D platformer that emphasizes destructible environments. This move showcases Nintendo's willingness to defy expectations, betting on the appeal of Donkey Kong to attract hardcore fans, while saving Mario for a future release. The Switch 2 will also feature robust third-party support and the launch of Mario Kart World, expected to be a system-seller despite its unconventional release timing.

Forza Horizon x Nintendo was not on my bingo card

The concept of an open-world Mario Kart game, inspired by the likes of Forza Horizon, was a surprising revelation. The short glimpse we saw suggests a vast, continuous world reminiscent of Bowser’s Fury, but on a much larger scale, accommodating numerous drivers. The zany physics and combat mechanics of Mario Kart are expected to translate well into this expansive setting, promising a chaotic and thrilling experience.

It’s very expensive

The Switch 2's price point of $449.99 USD is a significant concern. Amidst rising tariffs, a declining yen, and American inflation, this marks the most expensive launch in Nintendo's 40-plus year history in the US. At $150 more than the original Switch and $100 more than the Wii U, Nintendo is stepping away from its traditional strategy of leveraging lower prices. The success of the Switch 2 will hinge on whether it can justify this premium without the usual price advantage.
