Mario Kart World was initially developed for the Nintendo Switch, but its journey took a significant turn when the developers shifted their focus to the Nintendo Switch 2. Dive into the fascinating story behind this game's evolution and the adaptations made during its development.
Mario Kart World Developer Insights
Prototyping Began in 2017
Set to launch alongside the Nintendo Switch 2, Mario Kart World marks the latest addition to the iconic racing-kart series. Its development, however, kicked off back in 2017 while the team was still working on Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
In a recent installment of Nintendo's "Ask the Developer" series on May 21, the creators of Mario Kart World offered a deep dive into the game's origins. Producer Kosuke Yabuki revealed that the project started with a prototype in March 2017, with full development beginning later that year. He emphasized that after refining the formula in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the team aimed to create something even more ambitious.
Yabuki also clarified why the new game isn't titled Mario Kart 9. The goal was to transcend mere expansion and elevate the series, leading to the decision to forgo numbering for a fresh start. He noted, "So, we'd already added ‘MARIO KART WORLD’ to the concept art from the early stages of development."
Shifting to Switch 2
Programming Director Kenta Sato shared that the idea to transition to the Nintendo Switch 2 emerged in 2020. Although the team had some idea of what the next-generation console would offer, actual development units weren't available until later. Sato explained, "Until then, we just had to proceed with development based on provisional estimates."
The team was keen on ensuring their vision aligned with the new console's capabilities. Sato remarked, "Of course, the Switch system's performance is sufficient for developing different kinds of games, but if we had included everything we wanted to in this game's vast world, then it wouldn't have run at 60 fps and would have suffered from constant framerate drops."
Once they understood Switch 2's capabilities, their concerns dissipated, and they felt confident in realizing their vision. Sato expressed, "I remember being overjoyed when I discovered we could express even more than we'd originally set out to."
Transitioning to Switch 2 also meant enhancing the game's assets. Art Director Masaaki Ishikawa noted that the graphics required more detail. Far from being daunted, the art team was excited about the possibilities. The shift to Switch 2 allowed them to enrich the game's visuals, such as adding more trees to the terrain and enhancing the overall art quality, which were previously limited by the original Switch's performance.
Cow Being a Playable Character
A delightful surprise for fans was the announcement that Cow, previously a non-playable character, would now be a playable racer. Ishikawa explained that introducing new characters is a tradition for each Mario Kart game. He recounted, "And then one of the designers came up with that silly sketch of Cow cruising along, and I thought to myself, ‘This is it!’ (Laughs) So that's when we realized the course surroundings actually contained a lot of untapped resources." The inclusion of Cow not only felt natural but also opened up possibilities for incorporating more NPC characters, enhancing the game's interconnected world.
Beyond Cow's addition, the developers have meticulously worked on various aspects to create a rich, interconnected world. They've emphasized diverse foods to add depth and variety, and made adjustments to karts and tracks to enhance gameplay across different terrains.
With all the excitement building, fans eagerly anticipate the return of the beloved plumber in this expansive new racing world. Nintendo is set to make a big splash with the Switch 2 by launching one of its flagship franchises on day one.
Mario Kart World is scheduled for release on June 5, 2025, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2. Stay tuned for more updates and information by checking out our related articles below!
