Bungie, the renowned developer behind Destiny and Halo, has officially announced the release date for their highly anticipated first-person extraction shooter, Marathon, during an engaging gameplay reveal showcase. Dive in to discover more about the game's features and the upcoming Closed Alpha Playtest.
Marathon Coming on September 23, 2025
Returning to Tau Ceti

During the gameplay reveal on April 13, Bungie unveiled Marathon, set in the familiar universe of Tau Ceti. This new iteration of Marathon shifts its focus to multiplayer dynamics, featuring six teams of three players competing against each other and AI-controlled enemies to secure and extract valuable loot.
This marks a significant shift from the original Marathon trilogy, which began with the 1994 release of Marathon, followed by Marathon 2: Durandal in 1995, and concluding with Marathon Infinity in 1996. The original games were renowned for their deep, narrative-driven single-player experiences.

In a recent PlayStation.blog post dated April 12, Bungie's developers elaborated on what players can expect from the new Marathon. Despite the shift to a multiplayer focus, Marathon Narrative Leader Jonathan Goff emphasized maintaining the experiential storytelling that has defined Bungie's games. "The interweaving of narratives, events, and characters in the original trilogy delivered a world of discovery, wonder, and misdirection," Goff said. "Our goal with Marathon is not just to tell a story, but to build worlds in which stories can and will unfold."
Making Marathon a "Story Engine"

The gameplay reveal highlighted Marathon's emphasis on in-game economics, with every item in a player’s inventory having a sell price and clear indicators of what can be extracted from each map. However, Bungie clarified that the game’s focus extends beyond merely accumulating wealth.
Marathon is designed to be a "story engine," generating memorable experiences and lasting stories, even from failed missions or empty-handed escapes. Marathon Game Director Joe Ziegler, in a recent interview with PC Gamer, explained, "What we're trying to do is say, 'how do you go on adventures and then feel that survival challenge, that survival story that you're making?' Some of the best survival stories and moments I've had in gaming are actually failures or weird things that have happened." Ziegler emphasized that success in Marathon isn't solely measured by survival, but by the compelling stories that emerge from each run.
Working With Fans and Creators

Throughout Marathon's development, Bungie has actively collaborated with fans and content creators. From the game's early stages, players have been involved in playtesting prototypes, offering critical feedback that has shaped the game's direction.
One significant piece of feedback concerned the unpredictability and perceived unfairness of map designs, where players could camp spawns indefinitely or find desired loot already taken. In response, Ziegler explained, "After hearing this feedback, we moved to the design we have today, where each match is a fresh start for everyone. This consistent starting point means you and your teammates can better strategize before each run, and then you can race enemy teams to fight for the loot you’re looking for."
Marathon Closed Alpha Playtest

Bungie is set to launch a Closed Alpha Playtest for Marathon from April 23 to May 4, exclusively for residents of the U.S. and Canada.
The alpha will introduce four distinct Runner classes: Blackbird, akin to Destiny 2's Warlock; Void, with tactical invisibility; Locus, equipped with a tactical shield; and Glitch, renowned for its exceptional mobility. Players can explore three diverse maps: Perimeter, a woodland setting for five crews (15 players), and Dire Marsh, a more expansive map for six crews (18 players).

To participate, interested players should join the official Marathon Discord server, navigate to the alpha-access channel, and use the "/alpha" command to register. Invitations are not guaranteed, as this is a closed alpha and the first public exposure of the game.
No further playtests have been announced beyond the U.S. and Canada at this time. Marathon is slated for release on September 23, 2025, and will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Keep up with the latest news on Marathon by checking out our detailed articles.
