FromSoftware Will Continue To Create Single-Player Focused Games
The Duskbloods Director on Nintendo’s Creator’s Voice Blog

FromSoftware, the creators of the critically acclaimed Elden Ring, have reassured fans that they remain committed to crafting their signature single-player experiences. This assurance comes despite their recent foray into multiplayer gaming with the announcement of The Duskbloods, a PvPvE title exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2, unveiled during the April 2 Nintendo Direct. This title echoes the Soulslike themes and aesthetics fans love, yet it stands alongside another upcoming multiplayer project, Elden Ring Nightreign.
In a recent post on Nintendo’s insider blog, Creator’s Voice, on April 4, FromSoftware Director Hidetaka Miyazaki addressed these developments. He emphasized that the studio's dedication to single-player games remains unwavering. "As a side note, please allow me to address one thing. As previously mentioned, this is an online multiplayer title at its core, but this doesn’t mean that we as a company have decided to shift to a more multiplayer-focused direction with titles going forward," Miyazaki stated. He further affirmed their commitment by mentioning the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Elden Ring, indicating their ongoing focus on traditional single-player titles.
The Importance of Blood in The Duskbloods

Miyazaki shed light on the thematic core of The Duskbloods, which revolves around the concept of blood. Players assume the role of "Bloodsworn," members of a group endowed with superhuman abilities through the use of special blood. While drawing comparisons to vampires, Miyazaki clarified that the game's characters would not embody the traditional monstrous depiction of vampirism.
The narrative of The Duskbloods centers on the quest for "The First Blood," which emerges at the end of human society during an event known as "The Twilight of Humanity." This event spans across various times and places, offering a rich tapestry of settings.

Describing the game's environment, Miyazaki noted, "There are more traditional Gothic- or Victorian-style maps as well as those depicting the closing years of the early modern period, like the one glimpsed in the trailer with the train running through it." He emphasized that blood in The Duskbloods serves as a conceptual element, symbolizing themes of history, power, fate, and transcendence of human limitations.
Wide Variety of Characters and Online Multiplayer

The Duskbloods promises a diverse roster of characters, each with unique designs and personalities. Miyazaki confirmed that players will have over a dozen characters to choose from, with customization options available. "I think there are a lot of unique elements to the character designs and the weapons they use, so hopefully players can find one or two favorites among them," he remarked.
The game begins at a central "hub" where players select and customize their character before entering online multiplayer sessions, which can accommodate up to 8 players. After each match, players return to the hub to collect rewards, primarily character customization items.

Matches typically end when one player remains, though alternative victory conditions exist, such as defeating a formidable boss or meeting specific objectives. Miyazaki elaborated, "Regardless of whether it’s PvP or PvE, the idea is to provide players with an experience that allows them to learn and hone their skills as they play. We’ve therefore designed the PvE boss encounters to present a tough challenge and a sense of accomplishment upon defeating them."

Additionally, the game introduces "roles" that assign players specific responsibilities and objectives. Though details are still being finalized, Miyazaki provided examples like "Destined Rivals," where players must locate and defeat their rival, and "Destined Companion," where players seek out a partner to forge a bond and earn special rewards. "Roles can be assigned to any character via blood customization, allowing players to enjoy role-playing in a literal sense and hopefully adding to the drama of these engagements," he explained.
