Cronos: The New Dawn Adopts Linear Gameplay Structure
With Optional Backtracking and Level Exploration
Bloober Team, the studio behind Cronos: The New Dawn, has officially stated the upcoming sci-fi horror title will feature linear progression while allowing players to revisit and explore completed levels. The developers confirmed the narrative will include multiple endings and a New Game Plus mode for players seeking to uncover deeper layers of the dystopian Cronos universe.
Set in a retro-futuristic world interconnected with time-space rifts leading to 1980s Poland, Cronos tasks players with collecting residual souls of apocalypse victims. These souls grant combat advantages while gradually affecting the protagonist's mental state, as detailed on the game's Steam page.
When questioned about open-world elements, Game Director Jacek Zięba explained, "The time-travel narrative complicates this question. While maintaining linear story progression, we've incorporated moments of freedom within levels, including backtracking opportunities to resolve unfinished elements."
Optimizing Horror Through Structured Design
Lead Writer Grzegorz Like revealed the team prioritized linear progression after experimentation, stating this structure creates "a more effective horror experience." He clarified, "We've balanced this with player agency through dialogue choices that influence narrative elements and soul collection outcomes."
Player Choices Drive Narrative Outcomes
Multiple Endings and Enhanced Replay Value
Despite linear progression, Bloober Team emphasizes meaningful player choices leading to complex endings rather than binary outcomes. "We aimed for sophisticated, nuanced conclusions that provoke reflection," Like explained during a July interview. The confirmed New Game Plus mode will enable players to experience alternative narrative paths with increased difficulty.
Bloober Team's Creative Evolution
The developers describe Cronos: The New Dawn as representing their evolution within the horror genre, building upon their experience with the Silent Hill 2 Remake. While significantly different in scope from previous works like Layers of Fear, Zięba acknowledges, "The foundations for Cronos emerged from our collaboration with the Silent Hill team."
Cronos: The New Dawn launches September 5, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. For ongoing updates about Bloober Team's latest project, explore our additional coverage below!
