Avowed Director hints at the team's plans for the franchise following the game's successful release. Read on to discover more about the potential for an expansion or sequel, and other exciting developments from the company.
Avowed Director Wants To Do More With The World They Built
Possibility of Expansions or Sequels
Avowed's launch has been a resounding success, with both Microsoft and Obsidian expressing satisfaction with its sales figures. In a recent interview with Bloomberg on February 22, 2025, Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel discussed the potential for an expansion or sequel to the game.
While Obsidian has not yet announced any official plans for the franchise, Patel expressed a keen interest in continuing to direct games and is enthusiastic about creating new content. She stated, "Now that we've built this wonderful world, and also built this team's strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I'd love to see us do more with it." This suggests a strong possibility for future expansions and sequels.
Changes in Avowed During Development
The development of Avowed faced numerous challenges and underwent significant changes before reaching its final form. Patel described the process as "messy" but ultimately successful.
Originally starting in 2018, the project faced hurdles as Obsidian navigated the challenges of being an independent studio despite successes like Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity. Microsoft's acquisition of the company in 2020 led to the public announcement of Avowed, although the team had to abandon several planned features, including multiplayer elements. A leadership change in January 2021 prompted a reboot of the game.
Under Patel's leadership, managing over 80 people in production was no small feat. She emphasized the importance of focusing on the story and lore from the Pillars of Eternity franchise and shifting from an open world to open zones, which allowed for more detailed and engaging environments. Reflecting on her experience, Patel noted, "There's this interesting thing I've seen on every project I've worked on or seen during my time at the studio — things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."
Obsidian Wants Pillars of Eternity Tactics
With Avowed bringing the Pillars of Eternity franchise back into the spotlight, Obsidian is now exploring the idea of a tactics game set in the same universe. During a Twitch Livestream on February 23, 2025, Josh Sawyer, Director of Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, revealed the studio's interest in developing a Pillars of Eternity Tactics game.
Sawyer stated, "Pillars: Tactics is a thing that a lot of people would like, a lot of people at the studio would like to work on; there are a lot of people who like tactics games." However, he highlighted the challenges of determining the game's scope, including team size, visual quality, and overall scale. The interest in a tactics game has been noted before, and with Avowed's success, this project may soon become a reality.
Despite this, Sawyer remains committed to the idea of creating Pillars of Eternity 3, albeit with a significantly larger budget akin to that of Baldur's Gate 3, which was $100 million, far exceeding the budget of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.
