Warner Bros. Games has unveiled Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition, calling it the "most comprehensive version" of the brutal fighter. For the community, however, this release has raised major concerns that NetherRealm Studios has concluded its work on the title, signaling an end to new DLC fighters and substantial content updates.
The Definitive Edition bundles the base game with all previously launched downloadable content: the Khaos Reigns story expansion, Kombat Pack 1, and Kombat Pack 2.
It also introduces new character skins for Johnny Cage, Kitana, Scorpion, and Shao Khan, inspired by the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 film, alongside the Sub-Zero skin from the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie and a tournament-themed outfit for Liu Kang.
For many fans, the Definitive Edition marks the definitive end of Mortal Kombat 1's development cycle. While Warner Bros. is no stranger to these comprehensive editions—and NetherRealm's games often receive them—this release carries a particular sense of finality. With no official word on a potential Kombat Pack 3 or other meaningful updates, the community widely expects the T-1000 guest character, slated for March 2025, to be the game's last addition.
If this holds true, it represents a significant letdown for dedicated Mortal Kombat 1 players who anticipated longer-term support. Many are now revisiting a September 2024 tweet from NetherRealm's chief developer, Ed Boon, who sought to reassure fans worried about the studio moving on: "NetherRealm is still fully committed to supporting Mortal Kombat 1 for a long time to come."
"The game is done. This is their way of saying, 'Goodbye! See you in a year or two for another overpriced game stuffed with guest characters!'" remarked one clearly frustrated Reddit user.
Another commented, "MK1 officially had a shorter content lifespan than the damn Texas Chainsaw Massacre game, lmao."

For context, NetherRealm announced in July 2021 that it had begun work on its next project (which became Mortal Kombat 1), consequently ending DLC support for Mortal Kombat 11. That decision came roughly two years and three months after MK11's launch. A similar announcement has not yet been made for Mortal Kombat 1.
The game experienced a brief resurgence in January with the secret boss fight against Floyd, the pink ninja that Ed Boon had teased for years. This event sparked a fun, community-wide hunt that injected fresh energy into the game. However, this was a rare highlight in what many core fans consider a disappointing overall release.
The T-1000 Terminator was the final DLC fighter added via the Khaos Reigns expansion, joining other post-launch characters like Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian. Speculation about a potential Kombat Pack 3 has persisted among fans, amid ongoing questions about Mortal Kombat 1's commercial performance.
Warner Bros. Discovery, however, has signaled continued faith in the franchise. In November, CEO David Zaslav stated that the company plans to focus its gaming efforts on just four key titles, one of which is Mortal Kombat.

Many anticipate NetherRealm's next project will be a third installment in its DC fighting series, Injustice, though neither the studio nor Warner Bros. has confirmed this. The first Injustice: Gods Among Us launched in 2013, followed by Injustice 2 in 2017. After releasing Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019, the studio seemed to alternate between franchises but instead followed up with the 2023 soft reboot, Mortal Kombat 1.
In a June 2023 interview with IGN, Boon discussed the reasons behind this shift in vague terms. "There were a number of factors, some of which I can talk about, some of which I probably shouldn't," he said.
Two factors he mentioned were the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic and the team's decision to upgrade to a newer version of the Unreal Engine (MK11 used UE3, while MK1 runs on UE4).
"We really wanted to be careful with COVID and keeping everyone safe," Boon explained. "So there were a bunch of variables that led us to decide, 'Okay, let's do another Mortal Kombat game and hopefully we'll get back to the Injustice games later.'"
When asked directly if the Injustice series was finished, Boon was clear: "Not at all."
Mortal Kombat 1 has sold 5 million copies, contributing to a franchise total surpassing 100 million. While Mortal Kombat 11 became the series' best-seller with over 15 million copies sold globally by 2022, it's clear that Mortal Kombat 1's sales have not matched those of its immediate predecessors.
