"Gaming Monitors Outpace Expectations at Computex 2025"

Author : Anthony Update:May 25,2025

Three new gaming monitors unveiled at Computex are setting new benchmarks for refresh rates. Leading the pack is the Asus ROG Strix Ace XG248QSG, a 1080p display boasting an astonishing 610Hz refresh rate. Meanwhile, both MSI and Acer have introduced 1440p displays with 500Hz refresh rates, which demand top-tier hardware like the RTX 5090 and multi-frame generation to fully utilize.

Acer's Predator X27U F5 stands out with its QD-OLED display, promising exceptional color accuracy. Initially launching in Europe and China at a starting price of €899, Acer plans to bring it to the US market but has not yet disclosed pricing due to ongoing tariff negotiations. Given the rising costs of tech products in the US, affordability might be a concern.

MSI's 27-inch MPG 271QR X50 also features a QD-OLED panel and introduces an innovative AI feature. A small sensor at the base of the display detects when you step away, triggering the monitor to shut off and engage burn-in protection. This AI-driven approach to preventing burn-in, a common issue with OLED displays, adds an intriguing layer of technology.

Do Gaming Monitors Need to Be This Fast?

The introduction of monitors with such high refresh rates raises the question of necessity. The Asus ROG Strix Ace XG248QSG, with its 610Hz refresh rate, is exceptionally fast even in an era where technologies like Nvidia's multi-frame generation are pushing frame rates to new heights. Achieving these frame rates, especially in demanding games like Marvel Rivals, requires not only a powerful GPU like the RTX 5090 but also a robust CPU to ensure smooth data flow.

While technologies such as Nvidia Reflex and frame generation can help, achieving around 600 fps still demands a powerful CPU. The advantage of such high frame rates lies in significantly reduced render latency, which is crucial for competitive gaming. Players of games like Counter-Strike 2 prioritize low settings to maximize frame rates and minimize input lag, understanding that even a slight edge can be decisive.

However, the high cost of these cutting-edge monitors raises questions about their value for the average gamer. Whether the performance benefits justify the investment remains to be seen.
