The developers and publishers of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 have firmly stated that they are not aiming to transform the game into a "full live service" model following a backlash from the community over events perceived as promoting "FOMO," or the fear of missing out. This term, FOMO, refers to a strategy frequently employed by live service games to encourage quick player engagement and spending on time-limited virtual items.
Such tactics have been criticized for fostering an unhealthy relationship between games and their communities. Research commissioned by the UK's GambleAware charity in 2021 highlighted that many games utilize a "psychological nudge" to prompt purchases of loot boxes, often leveraging FOMO for limited-time items or deals. While Space Marine 2 does not feature loot boxes, it introduced community events aimed at unlocking exclusive cosmetics, sparking a wave of criticism and labeling the game as adopting live service elements.
In response to the community's feedback, Focus Entertainment and Saber Interactive, the game's publisher and developer, respectively, acknowledged the "cold feedback" regarding these events. They emphasized that they are not looking to turn Space Marine 2 into a full live service game. They assured players that items available during these events would be made accessible to everyone at a later date. The goal, they stated, is to allow the most dedicated players to unlock items earlier, without creating frustration or stress for the broader community.
The companies also apologized for the cumbersome process of unlocking items and announced they are working on a more streamlined experience. As a gesture of goodwill, Focus Entertainment is offering the coveted emblem-less Mk VIII Errant Helmet for free to all players who link their PROS account to Space Marine 2. This item was part of the Imperial Vigil community event, set to conclude on March 3, and was previously only obtainable by achieving victories with each of six classes in Operations Mode before the deadline.
Players of Space Marine 2 are eagerly anticipating the upcoming 7.0 update, which promises to introduce a new weapon, a new Operations map, and PvE Prestige Ranks. Following a record-breaking launch that saw the game sell 5 million copies and become the fastest-selling Warhammer video game ever, Focus and Saber have been addressing community concerns about content, outlining what players can expect in the coming months.
