The Blood of Dawnwalker made its much-anticipated debut with a reveal trailer, showcasing a blend of pre-rendered scenes and brief gameplay snippets. This trailer highlights the game's thematic similarities to The Witcher, while also incorporating elements reminiscent of Persona.
Developed by Rebel Wolves, a Polish studio formed by ex-CD Projekt Red team members who contributed to The Witcher series and Cyberpunk 2077, The Blood of Dawnwalker was initially announced as Dawnwalker in January 2024. The studio described it as a narrative-driven, open-world RPG set in a dark fantasy world, emphasizing meaningful player choices.
On January 13, almost a year to the day after its initial announcement, Rebel Wolves and publisher Bandai Namco hosted a reveal stream, culminating in an extended cinematic trailer lasting over four and a half minutes. The trailer sets the stage for the game's universe and introduces the Dawnwalkers—essentially supercharged vampires within the game's lore—as well as the protagonist, Coen, who becomes a Dawnwalker at the story's outset.
The Blood of Dawnwalker Reveal Trailer Is Reminiscent of The Witcher
With its dark fantasy backdrop, monstrous creatures, and open-world RPG framework featuring morally ambiguous decisions, The Blood of Dawnwalker resonates deeply with The Witcher fans, particularly those who enjoyed the vampire-centric and morally challenging Blood and Wine expansion. The game's tagline, "the world needs what it fears," further reinforces these connections. Coen's journey involves a morality system where players can choose whether he embraces his Dawnwalker nature to rescue his family or holds onto his humanity.
The Blood of Dawnwalker Also Takes a Page From Persona's Book
While The Blood of Dawnwalker shares many surface-level similarities with The Witcher, it innovates by integrating Persona-style time management mechanics. Each quest in the game consumes time, and as Rebel Wolves co-founder and game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz explained, "There are multiple approaches to saving Coen’s family with no clear division between main and side quests; you decide on how you spend the time." This design choice, dubbed a "narrative sandbox," means players cannot complete all quests and story arcs in one playthrough, encouraging replayability and ensuring each playthrough feels unique.
Currently in development for PC and next-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles, The Blood of Dawnwalker is planned as the first installment in a trilogy, with Bandai Namco serving as the publisher. Although no specific release date or launch window has been announced, given its 2022 start and triple-A budget, a 2027 release seems probable at the earliest. Rebel Wolves has promised a gameplay reveal for The Blood of Dawnwalker in the summer of 2025.
