Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has clarified that Borderlands 4's earlier release date wasn't influenced by competing titles, dismissing speculation linking the schedule change to anticipated launches like Marathon or Grand Theft Auto VI.
The cooperative shooter Borderlands 4 originally targeted September 23 but will now launch on September 12 across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Release Date Speculation Emerges
The 11-day adjustment fueled theories about Take-Two Interactive repositioning Borderlands 4 to avoid clashing with Rockstar's GTA VI, currently slated for fall 2025. As parent company to both Gearbox and Rockstar, Take-Two oversees release strategies for its portfolio.
Additional speculation suggested Borderlands 4's rescheduling aimed to circumvent Bungie's extraction shooter Marathon, originally set for the same September 23 release date. Borderlands 4 will receive its own PlayStation State of Play showcase today at 2pm PT.
Developer Denies Competitive Motivations
Pitchford firmly rejected these theories via Twitter, attributing the change solely to development progress: "Our decision is literally 0% about any other product's actual or theoretical launch date." He emphasized the team's confidence based on production milestones and bug resolution rates.
Industry analysts note the rarity of release advancements compared to delays. Chris Dring of The Game Business called the move "a bit odd" without commercial justification, noting marketing materials still reflect the original date.
Internal Release Strategy Considerations
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick previously discussed release sequencing in February, telling IGN: "We will time our releases to respect consumers' need to spend significant time with each title." This strategic approach aims to prevent franchise cannibalization within Take-Two's portfolio.
While maintaining confidence in GTA VI's fall 2025 window, Zelnick acknowledged typical development uncertainties: "As soon as you say words like absolutely, you jinx things." Some analysts speculate potential delays could push Rockstar's title toward early 2026.
