Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024: A Rocky Start, But Promises of Improvement
The launch of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 faced significant challenges, prompting an official response from the development team. This article details the issues encountered and the steps being taken to rectify them.
Unexpected Demand Overwhelms Servers
Jorg Neumann (MSFS head) and Sebastian Wloch (Asobo Studio CEO) addressed player concerns in a recent video. They admitted that while anticipating high demand, the actual player count significantly exceeded expectations, overwhelming the game's server infrastructure. The initial login process, involving data retrieval from a database, proved particularly vulnerable. While the system was stress-tested with 200,000 simulated users, the real-world player numbers far surpassed this, causing the cache to repeatedly collapse.
Login Queues, Missing Content, and Negative Steam Reviews
Attempts to mitigate the problem by increasing queue capacity yielded temporary success. However, the server cache continued to overload, leading to extended loading times and, in some cases, the game freezing at 97% loading. Furthermore, players reported missing aircraft and other content, a direct consequence of the server overload and incomplete data delivery. The resulting negative feedback on Steam reflects these widespread issues, with the game currently holding a "Mostly Negative" rating.
Ongoing Efforts and Apology
Despite the initial setbacks, the development team assures players that they are actively working to resolve the problems. The Steam page now states that the issues have been addressed and player access is stabilizing. A formal apology has been issued, acknowledging the inconvenience caused and expressing gratitude for player patience and feedback. Further updates are promised through official channels.
