Hideo Kojima Reveals Norman Reedus's Instant Commitment to Death Stranding
Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima recently recounted the surprisingly swift recruitment of Norman Reedus for Death Stranding. Despite the game's nascent development stage, Reedus readily agreed to join the project.
Death Stranding, a unique post-apocalyptic title from a highly respected game developer, unexpectedly became a major success. Central to its appeal was Norman Reedus's portrayal of Sam Porter Bridges, a courier navigating treacherous landscapes filled with hostile BTs and MULES. Reedus's performance, alongside other Hollywood stars, contributed significantly to the game's captivating narrative, generating considerable buzz following its release.
With Death Stranding 2 now in production and Reedus returning, Kojima shared insights into the original project's inception. He revealed on Twitter that he pitched the concept to Reedus during a sushi dinner, receiving an immediate affirmative response, even before a script existed. Within a month, Reedus was at the studio for motion capture, likely contributing to the iconic Death Stranding E3 2016 trailer.
Kojima also shed light on the circumstances surrounding the pitch. He had recently established Kojima Productions as an independent studio after parting ways with Konami, where he worked extensively on the Metal Gear franchise. His prior collaboration with Guillermo del Toro on the cancelled Silent Hills project (known for its impactful P.T. demo) initially forged the connection with Reedus, ultimately paving the way for their collaboration on Death Stranding years later.
