Exciting News for Okami Fans: A Direct Sequel is in Development!

Recently, we had the opportunity to interview the developers behind the upcoming Okami sequel in Osaka, Japan. This two-hour conversation with Clover's Hideki Kamiya, Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, and Machine Head Works producer Kiyohiko Sakata revealed some key details about the project's development, vision, and what fans can expect. Read on for the highlights!

Built with Capcom's RE Engine: The sequel is being developed using Capcom's proprietary RE Engine. This powerful engine allows the team to realize aspects of their original vision for Okami that were previously unattainable with older technology. Interestingly, some Clover team members lack RE Engine experience, prompting the collaboration with Machine Head Works.

A Reunion of Talent: Rumors of ex-PlatinumGames developers joining the project were confirmed, though specific names weren't disclosed. Kamiya hinted at the involvement of former Platinum and Capcom staff working through Machine Head Works.

A Long-Awaited Sequel: Capcom's interest in an Okami sequel has been simmering for some time, fueled by the game's growing popularity across various platforms. However, as Hirabayashi explained, the project required the right team and timing.

Direct Continuation: This is a true sequel, directly continuing the story from the original Okami. The developers confirmed that the game picks up where the first left off, leaving ample room for further narrative development. (No spoilers here!)

Amaterasu's Return: Yes, that's Amaterasu in the trailer!

Addressing Okamiden: The developers acknowledged Okamiden's existence and the mixed reception it received. They emphasized that this new sequel is a direct continuation of the original Okami's story.

Kamiya's Engagement with Fans: Kamiya confirmed he actively monitors social media, acknowledging fan expectations while emphasizing his commitment to creating the best possible game, not just fulfilling specific requests.

Kondoh's Musical Return: The iconic "Rising Sun" theme from the original Okami, arranged by Rei Kondoh, featured in the Game Awards trailer. This suggests Kondoh's potential involvement in the sequel's soundtrack.

Early Stages of Development: The developers stressed that the project is still in its early stages and urged fans to be patient. They prioritized quality over speed, assuring fans of their dedication to delivering a high-quality experience.
