While Henry Cavill may be the most famous actor to portray Geralt of Rivia, Doug Cockle, the voice of Geralt in CD Projekt Red's acclaimed RPG series, remains the definitive Geralt for many gamers. Their paths converge in Netflix's animated film, The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep, where Cockle lends his iconic voice to the character.
Interestingly, Cockle wasn't asked to emulate either Henry Cavill or Liam Hemsworth's portrayal. This allowed him to reprise his signature gravelly Geralt voice, unchanged from nearly 20 years of embodying the White Wolf. The result? Fans will hear the same voice they've known and loved.
Cockle recalls the challenges of creating that voice in 2005, during the recording of the first Witcher game. The deep register required extensive vocal strain, leading to eight-to-nine-hour recording sessions that left him vocally exhausted. However, through persistent recording for The Witcher 2, his vocal chords adapted, much like an athlete's muscles strengthening through training.
The release of The Last Wish in English marked a turning point. Access to the books provided Cockle with a deeper understanding of Geralt's character, clarifying the developers' requests for a more emotionally restrained performance. This nuanced understanding enriched his portrayal.
Cockle quickly connected with Andrzej Sapkowski's writing, drawing parallels to his childhood love of Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. Season of Storms stands out as a personal favorite, a story he'd relish the opportunity to voice in a future adaptation.

In Sirens of the Deep, based on the short story "A Little Sacrifice," Cockle enjoys the lighter moments, particularly a campfire conversation between Geralt and Jaskier, showcasing the often-overlooked softer side of the stoic monster hunter. He appreciates the multifaceted nature of Geralt's personality, embracing both the serious and humorous aspects.
“I enjoy the gravitas of Geralt when he's all serious and mopey, but I do also like those moments when he's trying to be light. When he's trying to crack a joke and it just doesn't go very well for him most of the time because he's just not funny.”

Sirens of the Deep presented a unique challenge: speaking Mermaid. Cockle found this surprisingly difficult, despite phonetic preparation. His return to the video game world in The Witcher 4, however, promises a smoother experience, with Geralt taking on a supporting role to Ciri, the protagonist.
While remaining tight-lipped about specifics, Cockle enthusiastically supports the shift in narrative focus to Ciri, believing it to be a compelling and exciting direction for the franchise.
