While *Dynasty Warriors: Origins* may focus on battling hordes of nameless soldiers, one of the most captivating gameplay elements returning from previous entries is the duels. Here's how they function within the game.
What Are Duels in Dynasty Warriors: Origins?
Duels, a feature that first debuted in *Dynasty Warriors 4*, make a triumphant return after more than two decades in *Dynasty Warriors: Origins*. You won't encounter duels right away; they become available starting from Chapter 2. However, not every enemy is a candidate for a duel. You can only challenge high-ranking and prominent enemy officers. When you encounter such an officer, you'll have a brief window to initiate a duel by pressing both the R1 and L1 buttons simultaneously.
Once a duel is initiated, an arena of soldiers will encircle you, setting the stage for a one-on-one confrontation with the enemy officer. Unlike regular combat, a duel features a unique mechanic: a meter at the top of the screen displays both your progress and your opponent's. Landing hits on your opponent will gradually fill your portion of the meter, while taking hits will advance your opponent's meter. The objective is to fill the meter completely by inflicting enough damage on your opponent.
Your health at the start of the duel doesn't influence your initial position on the meter; instead, it's your morale that plays a crucial role. If you're winning, your meter will be more filled; if you're losing, your opponent's will be larger. In evenly matched battles, the meter will reflect this balance. During a duel, it's essential to observe your opponent's attack patterns, dodge effectively, and parry when necessary. Keeping a safe distance is also wise, especially if your opponent employs a Battle Art. Remember, time is limited, but rushing in recklessly can lead to defeat.
Winning a duel in *Dynasty Warriors: Origins* grants you the ability to deal massive damage to your opponent and significantly boosts your morale. Conversely, losing a duel results in substantial damage to you and a severe morale drop for your army, which can be disastrous in the late stages of a battle. If no clear winner emerges, both parties simply disengage, and the battle continues without any negative consequences. However, certain duels are unavoidable and critical; losing these results in mission failure, while winning them leads to an automatic victory. Thus, initiating a duel can be a strategic move, but underestimating your opponent can lead to catastrophic outcomes.
And that's the essence of dueling in *Dynasty Warriors: Origins*.
*Dynasty Warriors: Origins* is now available on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
