Sony Europe's former CEO revealed a key factor behind the PlayStation 2's dominance: securing exclusive rights to Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto franchise before the Xbox's launch. This strategic move significantly boosted PS2 sales and cemented its place in gaming history.
Sony's Strategic Masterstroke
The GTA Exclusivity Deal

Chris Deering, former CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, disclosed in a GamesIndustry.biz interview that the impending 2001 Xbox launch spurred Sony to proactively secure exclusive deals with key third-party developers and publishers. This strategy resulted in a two-year exclusivity agreement with Take-Two Interactive (Rockstar Games' parent company), bringing Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, and San Andreas exclusively to the PS2. Deering admitted to concerns about Microsoft's potential to counter with similar exclusive deals, emphasizing the proactive nature of Sony's approach.

While the earlier top-down GTA titles were successful, Deering acknowledged initial uncertainty about GTA III's potential. The 3D leap was a gamble, but the strategy proved remarkably successful, contributing significantly to the PS2's record-breaking sales as the best-selling console of all time. Deering highlighted the mutually beneficial nature of the deal, with Rockstar benefiting from reduced royalty payments. He noted that such platform-exclusive deals are common practice across various industries, including today's social media landscape.
Rockstar's 3D Revolution

Grand Theft Auto III's groundbreaking shift to a 3D environment marked a pivotal moment in gaming. Rockstar co-founder Jamie King confirmed in a November 2021 GamesIndustry.biz interview that the company had been waiting for the technological capability to realize their vision of a fully immersive 3D open world. The PS2 provided the necessary platform, and the subsequent GTA titles built upon this foundation, introducing new stories, mechanics, and enhanced graphics. Despite the PS2's technical limitations, the three exclusive GTA titles became top sellers for the console.
The GTA 6 Enigma
The highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI remains shrouded in secrecy. Former Rockstar developer Mike York, in a December 5th YouTube video, suggested that Rockstar's silence is a deliberate marketing tactic. While extended periods of silence can sometimes dampen hype, York argued that the scarcity of information organically fuels speculation and excitement within the fanbase. He shared anecdotes from his time at Rockstar, highlighting the developers' amusement at the fan theories and their engagement with the community's interpretations of cryptic clues in trailers, such as the Mt. Chiliad mystery in GTA V. Despite the unanswered questions surrounding GTA VI, the ongoing speculation maintains a vibrant and engaged community.
