Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: A Turn-Based RPG Inspired by Classics
Sandfall Interactive's upcoming turn-based RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, is generating significant excitement. Drawing inspiration from classic JRPGs, Final Fantasy, and Persona, the game blends turn-based combat with real-time elements, creating a unique gameplay experience.
The game's director, Guillaume Broche, recently discussed the game's influences, highlighting a desire to create a high-fidelity turn-based RPG. He cited Atlus' Persona and Square Enix's Octopath Traveler as key inspirations, praising their stylish visuals and nostalgic appeal. However, while acknowledging the influence of these titles, Broche emphasizes that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is not a direct imitation, but rather a reflection of his personal gaming history and creative vision.
The core gameplay revolves around preventing the "Paintress" from unleashing death through her art. Combat blends turn-based command input with the need for real-time reactions to enemy attacks, a system reminiscent of Persona and Final Fantasy. The game's environments, such as the gravity-defying "Flying Waters," promise to be as visually striking as its narrative.
Broche specifically points to the Final Fantasy VIII, IX, and X era as a major influence, stating that the game's core mechanics draw heavily from those titles. He also notes Persona's impact on camera movement, menu design, and the overall dynamic feel of the game's interface. However, he stresses that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 maintains its own distinct art style and gameplay mechanics.
The open world allows for seamless party member switching and the use of unique traversal abilities to solve environmental puzzles. The development team aims to create a game that resonates with players in the same way classic titles impacted their lives, encouraging experimentation and creative character builds.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is slated for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox in 2025.
