Baldur’s Gate 3 has experienced a significant surge in player numbers on Steam following the release of the highly anticipated Patch 8. This update has positioned developer Larian Studios perfectly to shift their focus to their next major project.
Patch 8, which launched last week, introduced 12 new subclasses and a new photo mode to Baldur's Gate 3. The release of these features led to a notable increase in player engagement as fans rushed to explore the new content. Over the weekend, the game achieved a concurrent player peak of 169,267 on Steam—an impressive milestone for a single-player role-playing game in its second year. While Steam makes these numbers public, Sony and Microsoft keep PlayStation and Xbox player statistics confidential.
Reflecting on Patch 8's impact, Larian's CEO Swen Vincke took to Twitter to express optimism about the game's future. He credited not only the patch but also the thriving mod support for the sustained interest in Baldur's Gate 3. Vincke stated, "With mod support thriving, I think the game will continue to do well for quite some time. It gives us room to focus on making our next big thing as good as we can, and that focus is more than welcome. We've got big shoes to fill."
Vincke also shared his satisfaction with the effort put into Patch 8, noting that it brought many players back to the game. He emphasized the importance of this update as the final major one for Baldur’s Gate 3, marking the end of a remarkable journey for the developer. Since its launch in 2023, Baldur’s Gate 3 has received critical acclaim and achieved substantial commercial success, maintaining strong sales into 2025.
Larian Studios surprised the gaming community by announcing their departure from the Baldur’s Gate series and Dungeons & Dragons to work on a new, undisclosed project. They had previously teased this new game before implementing a media blackout to concentrate on its development.
Meanwhile, Hasbro, the owner of D&D, has hinted at continuing the Baldur’s Gate series. During the Game Developers Conference, Dan Ayoub, Hasbro's SVP of digital games, revealed that there is significant interest in the series following Larian's departure. Ayoub mentioned, "We're kind of working out our plans for the future and what we're going to be doing with that. And actually, in pretty short order, we're going to have some stuff to talk about around that."
While Ayoub did not specify whether this "stuff" would be a new Baldur's Gate game or a crossover similar to previous collaborations with Magic: The Gathering, he expressed a desire for a Baldur's Gate 4. He acknowledged the challenge of following up such a successful title, saying, "It's somewhat of an unenviable position. We're not in a hurry. We're going to take a very measured approach... We've got a lot of plans, a lot of different ways to go about it. We're starting to think about, okay, yeah, we're ready to start dipping toes a little bit and talking about a few things. And I think, in really short order, like I said, again, not to over-tease that point, we're going to have some other things to talk about around that."
