A strategic two-player board game
Mancala encompasses a series of turn-based strategy games for two players, traditionally played with seeds, stones, or beans placed in rows of pits or holes on a board or playing surface. The goal is to capture your opponent's pieces according to specific rules. (Source: Wikipedia)
The mancala family includes numerous variations such as oware, bao, omweso, and others.
This implementation features classic mancala variants including kalah, oware, and congkak.
Players use a board with six small pits (houses) on each side and a larger scoring pit (store) at each end. The objective is to collect more seeds than your opponent.
Kalah gameplay rules:
1. The game begins with four to six seeds placed in each house.
2. Players control the six houses on their side of the board. Seeds in the rightmost store represent each player's score.
3. During turns, players pick up all seeds from one house and distribute them counter-clockwise, placing one seed in each subsequent house including their own store (but skipping the opponent's store).
4. If the final seed lands in an empty house on the player's side while the opposite house contains seeds, both the last seed and the opponent's seeds are captured.
5. Landing the final seed in your store grants an additional turn, with no limit to consecutive moves.
6. The game concludes when one player empties all their houses. Remaining seeds go to the opponent's store, and the player with more seeds wins.
Oware gameplay rules:
1. Setup mirrors kalah, with four to six seeds per house and players controlling their side's six houses.
2. Players sow seeds by picking up all seeds from one house and distributing them counter-clockwise, skipping both stores and the starting house. Houses with 12+ seeds are bypassed during distribution.
3. Captures occur when sowing brings an opponent's house to exactly two or three seeds. Consecutive qualifying opponent houses are captured until reaching a non-qualifying house.
4. When opponents have empty houses, players must make moves that provide seeds. If impossible, players claim their remaining seeds to end the game.
5. The game ends when a player captures most seeds or when players split them equally.
