Phantom Blade Zero: A Deeper Dive into Gameplay and Development
Prepare for a thrilling adventure in Phantom Blade Zero, boasting a range of gameplay features and adjustable difficulty. This 2025 release promises an engaging experience with exciting combat and exploration.
Debunking the "Soulslike" Label: Difficulty Options and Combat Focus
Featuring four difficulty settings – Easy, Ordinary, Difficult, and Extremely Difficult – Phantom Blade Zero distances itself from the "Soulslike" comparisons that arose following its PlayStation Showcase 2023 appearance. Game Director Soulframe clarified on Twitter (following its Summer Game Fest 2024 showcase) that the game's design prioritizes "combo-driven, heart-pumping combat" rather than relentless difficulty. While inspired by Soulslike titles in its level design (multi-layered maps, multiple paths, hidden areas), the core gameplay is distinct. Soulframe describes it as "Ninja Gaiden Combat on a Souls Game Map," blending hack-and-slash action with expansive exploration.
Extensive Weaponry, Playtime, and Unique Boss Encounters
Players will have access to over 30 primary and 20 secondary weapons, each with unique combat properties. Expect a substantial playtime of 20-30 hours for the main story, with an additional 20-30 hours of side content. Boss fights are multi-phased, offering a convenient restart option from the second phase upon death. A new "Li Wulin" mode allows players to rematch defeated bosses, potentially unlocking hidden challenges. An intriguing mechanic influencing the game's ending adds further replayability.
"Year of the Snake" Gameplay Trailer and Future Announcements
The recently released "Year of the Snake" gameplay trailer showcased Soul, the protagonist, battling the "Chief Disciple of The Seven Stars," and highlighted weapons like the "Weapon No.13 Soft Snake Sword" and "Weapon No.27 White Serpent and Crimson Viper." While a release date is anticipated in 2025, the development team promises further exciting announcements throughout the year.
Phantom Blade Zero is currently under development for PlayStation 5, with a PC release also planned. Stay tuned for further updates!
