Funcom recently addressed Dune: Awakening players in an AMA, confirming plans to revamp PvP in the Deep Desert—an area criticized as "toxic" due to persistent griefing, even after removing the Ornithopter crush mechanic.
In a transparent developer letter, creative director Joel Bylos stated, "We're committed to letting PvE players experience endgame content without mandatory PvP interactions," emphasizing, "Forcing PvE-focused players into unwanted conflicts contradicts our design philosophy."
"The Deep Desert's core vision remains—a weekly-resetting danger zone where guilds collaborate to claim high-value rewards. We envisioned players embracing this tension-filled loop, constantly alert in the universe's most lethal region. However, we recognize the need for adjustments."
Bylos acknowledged the zone's "hyper-competitive environment" pushed PvE enthusiasts into unwanted combat. As a solution, select Deep Desert areas will become "Partial Warfare (PvE)" zones for safe resource gathering, while major spice fields and strategic points retain their "War of Assassins (PvP)" high-risk/high-reward status.
Within 48 hours of this announcement, Funcom began testing significant revisions.
These changes debut alongside the Public Test Client, allowing players to trial experimental builds—bugs and instability included. The endgame overhaul expands PvE territory near the shield wall, converting rows A-D and half of E from PvP to PvE.
This effectively transitions 50% of the Deep Desert from PvP to PvE, a stark contrast to the current setup where only row A is PvE-protected.
As PC Gamer notes, test server implementation doesn't guarantee final release—but clearly demonstrates Funcom's commitment to refining endgame balance.
Dune: Awakening continues its stellar launch, maintaining 'Very Positive' Steam reviews. The survival MMO peaked at 189,333 concurrent players this month after surpassing 142,000 at launch, becoming Funcom's fastest-selling title with 1+ million players.
Our 8/10 review praised it as "a masterclass in Herbertian worldbuilding where survival progression shines, despite combat and endgame turbulence that occasionally undermines its potential."
New players should explore available character classes, follow our walkthrough for narrative guidance, and utilize resource guides for locating iron, steel, aluminum, plus Trainer locations crucial for Arrakis survival.
