Following the reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2, it appears that the partnership between Nintendo and Xbox is set to continue and even expand. Microsoft's head of gaming, Phil Spencer, has reaffirmed his commitment to the Switch platform as a strategic way to engage with gamers who are not typically part of the Xbox ecosystem.
In a recent interview with Variety, Spencer was asked about specific projects planned for the Nintendo Switch 2. He emphasized that just as Xbox has supported the original Switch, it intends to do the same with the Switch 2. "Nintendo has been a great partner. We think it is a unique way for us to reach players who aren’t PC players, who aren’t players on Xbox," Spencer stated. He highlighted the importance of growing Xbox's community and investing in their game franchises to reach a broader audience.
"I’m really a big believer in what Nintendo means for this industry and us continuing to support them," Spencer added. "And getting the support from them for our franchises, I think, is an important part of our future." Spencer has previously praised Nintendo's innovation during the initial teaser of the Switch 2 and confirmed Xbox's intention to expand its game offerings across multiple platforms, including PlayStation, Steam, and Nintendo's consoles. When asked if the Switch 2 reveal made him eager to announce Xbox's next console plans, Spencer remained focused on Xbox's current strategy. "No. I think all of us in this industry should focus on our communities and the player base that we’re building," he said. He expressed inspiration from other creators and platform holders but stood firm in Xbox's ongoing plans.
Xbox continues to prioritize making their games accessible on as many platforms as possible, including cloud, PC, and consoles. Titles like Pentiment and Obsidian's Grounded have already been released on Nintendo platforms, and it will be intriguing to see what Xbox has in store for the Switch 2 once it launches.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled to officially debut on June 5, 2025. While pre-orders have not yet started, keep an eye on our Switch 2 pre-order hub page for updates on when they might become available.
