A curated selection of retro Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the Nintendo Switch eShop. While the Nintendo Switch Online app boasts a robust Game Boy Advance library, this list focuses on titles independently released on the eShop. We've chosen ten favorites – four GBA and six DS – presented without ranking.
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. Although the Genesis/Mega Drive original holds a slight edge in my opinion, this GBA version is a solid alternative. A worthwhile comparison piece, offering a streamlined experience. Steel Empire is enjoyable regardless of the platform, even appealing to those not typically drawn to shooters.
Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

While the Mega Man X series on home consoles faltered, the Mega Man legacy found a true successor on the GBA with Mega Man Zero. This marks the beginning of an excellent side-scrolling action series. While the initial entry has some rough edges, later titles refine the formula. Start here, and feel free to explore the rest of the series.
Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

A Mega Man double-feature! Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network offer distinctly different gameplay experiences, both excellent in their own right. Battle Network is an RPG featuring a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While the series' later installments saw diminishing returns, the original game provides ample enjoyment.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

The Castlevania Advance Collection is a must-have, but if forced to choose a standout, Aria of Sorrow takes the crown. For me, it even surpasses the acclaimed Symphony of the Night on occasion. The soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the gameplay is so engaging that the grinding doesn't feel tedious. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal. A top-tier third-party GBA title.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

The original Shantae enjoyed cult status, but limited distribution hindered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge, initially released on DSiWare, catapulted the Half-Genie Hero to greater fame. Its success ensured Shantae's continued presence across console generations. Interestingly, this title's origins trace back to an unreleased GBA game, which is slated for release soon.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Arguably a GBA title (its origin), Ace Attorney blends investigation and courtroom drama with comedic flair and compelling narratives. The first game sets a high bar, though later installments are also highly regarded.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the Ace Attorney creator, Ghost Trick features equally strong writing and innovative gameplay. As a ghost, you manipulate objects to save others while unraveling the mystery of your own demise. A captivating and surprisingly overlooked DS title.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

A top-tier Nintendo DS game, best experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version provides a viable alternative for those without access to a DS. A truly exceptional game in every aspect.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all three Nintendo DS Castlevania games. While all are excellent, Dawn of Sorrow benefits significantly from the replacement of touch controls with standard button controls. However, all three are highly recommended.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

A franchise that thrives on the DS/3DS ecosystem, but Atlus's Switch port is surprisingly playable. Each Etrian Odyssey game is a substantial RPG, with Etrian Odyssey III being the largest and most rewarding.
