Sony has announced a significant shift in its PlayStation Plus service strategy, effective from January 2026, focusing exclusively on PlayStation 5 (PS5) games for its PlayStation Plus Essentials monthly games and the Games Catalog. This strategic move was detailed in a recent PlayStation Blog post, which also highlighted the February 2025 monthly titles.
The company stated, "As we shift to PS5, PS4 games will no longer be a key benefit and will only be occasionally offered for PlayStation Plus Monthly Games and Game Catalog." This change will not impact the PS4 games that subscribers have already claimed through the service. However, PS4 titles within the Games Catalog will remain playable until they are rotated out of the catalog during the monthly refresh.
Sony is committed to enhancing the PlayStation Plus experience and plans to continue providing benefits such as exclusive discounts, online multiplayer access, and online game save storage. The company emphasized its focus on delivering new PS5 titles monthly to enrich the gaming experience for its users.
The PS4, launched in 2013, has been succeeded by the PS5, released in 2020. Sony noted that a significant portion of its player base has transitioned to the newer console, showing a preference for PS5 titles. This shift in consumer behavior is a driving factor behind the company's decision to focus on PS5 games.
While it remains uncertain whether Sony will relegate PS4 games to the Classics Catalog, which currently features ports and remasters of games from earlier PlayStation generations, more details are expected to be shared as the transition date approaches.
