Sony's Proposed Acquisition of Kadokawa: Employee Enthusiasm Amidst Concerns
Sony's confirmed intention to acquire Japanese media conglomerate Kadokawa has sparked mixed reactions. While ongoing negotiations prevent a final decision, Kadokawa employees reportedly express optimism about the potential acquisition, despite the loss of independence it entails.
Analyst Perspective: A Win for Sony, Uncertain for Kadokawa
Economic analyst Takahiro Suzuki suggests the acquisition benefits Sony more significantly than Kadokawa. Sony's shift towards entertainment necessitates bolstering its intellectual property (IP) portfolio, a weakness addressed by Kadokawa's extensive library, encompassing successful anime (like Oshi no Ko and Dungeon Meshi), manga, and games such as Elden Ring. However, this acquisition would place Kadokawa under Sony's direct control, potentially limiting its operational autonomy. Concerns exist regarding stricter management and increased scrutiny of projects not directly contributing to IP development.
Employee Optimism Despite Potential Drawbacks
Despite the potential downsides, a positive sentiment prevails among Kadokawa employees regarding a Sony takeover. Interviews conducted by Weekly Bunshun reveal a lack of opposition to the acquisition, with many favoring Sony over the current leadership.
This positive outlook is largely attributed to dissatisfaction with the current Natsuno administration, particularly its handling of a June cyberattack by the BlackSuit hacking group. The attack resulted in the theft of over 1.5 terabytes of data, including sensitive employee information. The perceived inadequate response from President and CEO Takeshi Natsuno has fueled employee discontent, leading to hopes that a Sony acquisition would bring about leadership changes.
