Magic: The Gathering has delivered numerous Secret Lair crossovers this year—from SpongeBob SquarePants to Deadpool—and another is arriving next month at high speed. Unlike the recent Final Fantasy collaboration—which introduced a full draftable set plus four pre-constructed Commander decks—the Sonic crossover follows a familiar model, spanning just three Secret Lair drops. Secret Lair is the name for Magic's timed-exclusive releases, offering a select number of special-art cards sold directly by Wizards of the Coast rather than in random booster packs.
The Turbo Gear drop includes six existing Magic cards reinterpreted with Sonic-themed art and names, plus one bonus token card. Among them are popular Commander staples such as Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves—after all, Sonic's footwear absolutely deserves its own cards. Also noteworthy is the legendary vehicle Weatherlight appearing as Tornado, Sonic's biplane. Thanks to a recent rules update, you can even use Tornado as your Commander if you wish.
According to Wizards of the Coast, this release is intended to pair with another drop focused on Sonic’s cast of characters. While we can’t yet reveal those cards, the Turbo Gear store description gives one example: equipping The Reaver Cleaver—reimagined here as Knuckles's Gloves—on Knuckles himself. This approach aligns with past crossover drops, such as 2023's Tomb Raider, where reprinted cards were designed to synergize with the new Legendary creatures, almost like a starter pack for building your own Commander deck.
The Turbo Gear Secret Lair drop, along with the other two releases, goes on sale July 14 at 9 AM Pacific Time via the official Secret Lair website. The non-foil edition costs $29.99, while the foil version is priced at $39.99. Be sure to arrive on time—these drops are produced in limited quantities, and if previous crossovers are any indication, they're likely to sell out quickly.
