Path of Exile 2 Expedition Guide: Mastering Explosives, Rewards, and the Pinnacle Boss
Path of Exile 2 introduces Expeditions, a thrilling endgame event offering unique rewards and challenges. This guide covers Expedition mechanics, the passive skill tree, and strategies for maximizing your rewards. Four major endgame events—Delirium, Breaches, Rituals, and Expeditions—await you on the Atlas. Expeditions, a returning feature from previous leagues, offer a dynamic gameplay loop centered around explosive placement and strategic monster encounters.
Uncovering and Engaging with Expeditions
Expedition map nodes on the Atlas are marked with a distinctive light blue, spiral-shaped icon. Guarantee Expedition encounters by using an Expedition Precursor Tablet in a completed Lost Tower slot. Once in an Expedition map, locate the central area marked by distinctive markers and a tent housing four unique NPCs. These NPCs provide basic instructions, though mastering the intricacies of the system requires further exploration.
The core mechanic involves strategically placing explosives near various markers to summon Runic Monsters and unearth valuable chests.
- Runic Monsters: Detonating explosives near red markers spawns these creatures. Larger markers yield larger monster packs. Unearthed Remnants further enhance these packs.
- Unearthed Remnants: These relics provide beneficial or detrimental modifiers. Examples include increased elemental damage from monsters, offset by increased item rarity from chests.
- Excavated Chests: Located near black markers bearing the Expedition symbol, these chests contain event-specific rewards: Artifacts, Logbooks, powerful currencies, Waystones, and high-tier gear.
The explosive placement UI appears in the bottom-right corner. Plan your explosive placements carefully; their area of effect (displayed as a green circle) should not overlap to maximize efficiency. After placing explosives, activate them via the Detonator.
Should you perish, the map resets, but you can strategically retreat and return later. The event doesn't end upon leaving the area. This allows for a tactical approach: detonate explosives, retreat, and then re-engage with powerful AoE abilities.
Conquering the Expedition Pinnacle Map
Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests have a chance to drop Expedition Logbooks. These are crucial for accessing the Expedition Pinnacle Map. Speak with Dannig in your hideout to open the Expedition Map interface. Insert the Logbook into the designated slot and click "Open Portals."
This opens a significantly larger Expedition event with a vastly increased number of explosives. The Pinnacle Map introduces Olroth, a formidable boss that doesn't always appear but has a higher spawn chance on higher-level maps. A skull icon on the minimap indicates Olroth's presence. Strategic explosive placement is key to reaching and defeating him.
Defeating Olroth is essential for acquiring Expedition Passive Skill Tree points (doubled for each victory). These points enhance the Expedition event, boosting rewards and modifying monster spawns.
Enhancing Expeditions with the Passive Skill Tree
Access the Expedition Passive Skill Tree within the Atlas Passive Skill Tree menu (top-left of the Atlas screen). It's located in the top-right corner, distinguished by a spiraling blue design.
The tree features eight Notable nodes and eight nodes increasing Logbook difficulty (and the Olroth encounter). Each Olroth defeat awards double points, necessitating increased difficulty for each new Notable node.
Here's a prioritized list of Notable nodes:
Notable Expedition Passive | Effect | Requirements |
---|---|---|
Disturbed Rest | 50% more Runic Monster Flags | N/A |
Detailed Records | 50% more Logbooks, Logbooks always spawn with 3x Modifiers | Disturbed Rest |
Timed Detonations | 50% more Artifacts, Detonation chains travel 50% faster | N/A |
Weight of History | 35% boost to Remnant effects | N/A |
Unearthed Anomalies | Remnants gain an additional Suffix and Prefix modifier | Weight of History |
Legendary Battles | 50% more Rare monsters, 50% more Exotic Coinage from Runic Monsters | Timed Detonations |
Extreme Archaeology | Reduces Explosives to 1, 150% radius boost, 100% placement range boost, 20% less enemy Life | N/A |
Frail Treasures | 3x more Excavated Chest Markers, disappear after 5 seconds | N/A |
Avoid Extreme Archaeology. While it offers significant buffs, the drastic reduction in explosives significantly limits overall rewards.
Harvesting Expedition Rewards
The primary rewards are Artifacts, used to trade with specific vendors for gear. Exotic Coinage refreshes vendor inventories.
Reward | Use | Gear |
---|---|---|
Broken Circle Artifact | Gwennen (Weapons) | Weapons |
Black Scythe Artifact | Tujen (Belts and Jewelry) | Belts & Jewelry |
Order Artifact | Rog (Armor) | Armor |
Sun Artifact | Dannig (Used to acquire other Artifacts) | Various Artifacts |
Exotic Coinage | Refreshes any Expedition vendor's inventory | N/A |
Remember, each Expedition features only one vendor. Artifacts remain in your inventory after map completion.
Expedition Logbooks, obtained from Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests, unlock the Pinnacle Map system and the chance to confront Olroth, the Pinnacle Boss. Defeating Olroth provides substantial rewards, including high-tier currency and unique items. The higher the map difficulty, the higher the chance of Olroth appearing and the better the rewards.
