Star Wars icon Mark Hamill experienced an unexpected wardrobe malfunction at the 2025 BAFTAs – and the actor later shared that fellow screen legend Demi Moore gave him an approving thumbs-up from the audience as it happened.
During an appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Hamill described the moment his trousers began to slip as "the ultimate actor's nightmare."
He recalled that the pants, which started falling as he presented the award for Best Film to Conclave, had seemed fine during pre-ceremony fittings.
"I tried those pants on twice. First at home in California, and my stylist asked how they fit. I told him, 'Fine. A bit snug, but they'll work. Maybe let them out just a little,'" Hamill explained while promoting Mike Flanagan’s upcoming film, The Life of Chuck.
But the situation changed right before the event. "Fast forward to London, with the car waiting and only 20 minutes until departure. I put the pants on,” Hamill continued. “They had been let out by four or five inches! Thankfully, our dresser Mary had a safety pin and secured them in the back. I thought everything was fine."
As often happens in show business, if something can go wrong, it will. "They announced my name, and as I walked toward the podium, I felt the pin give way," he told Colbert. "With every step, my trousers slid further down. I'm not exaggerating—by the time I reached the podium, they were around my knees!"
In that moment, Hamill glanced into the crowd looking for his wife but instead caught Demi Moore's eye. He silently mouthed, "Did you see my pants fall down?" Her response was an encouraging thumbs-up and a warm smile.
Like a true Jedi, Hamill maintained his composure and carried on. "I mentally focused, almost like self-hypnosis. I tried to project to the audience, 'You did not see my pants fall. It’s all an illusion,'" Hamill said on the late-night show. "I stuck strictly to the teleprompter and didn’t acknowledge it. I didn’t want to joke about it or draw more attention."

Hamill mentioned that the BAFTAs director later informed him the podium hid the view from the front, though attendees on the sides had a clear sight of his pants around his knees. In a humorous aside, Hamill reassured Colbert’s audience that there would be no repeat of the incident. "Rest assured, my pants are very secure tonight," he said.
For those wondering if Mark Hamill might ever return as Luke Skywalker’s Force ghost, think again. The legendary actor has definitively stated he won’t rejoin the iconic sci-fi series, suggesting it’s time for Star Wars to leave legacy characters behind and focus on new stories.
