Fallout Developers Express Interest in a New Game, But With a Condition
Several key figures in the Fallout franchise, including director Josh Sawyer, have voiced their enthusiasm for developing a new entry. However, their participation hinges on a crucial factor: creative freedom.
The Need for Novelty
In a recent YouTube Q&A, Sawyer stated his willingness to helm another Fallout title, but only if he's granted sufficient creative leeway. He emphasized the importance of avoiding restrictive limitations, stating, "Any project has to do with ‘what are we doing, what are the boundaries…what am I allowed to do and not allowed to do?’ If those constraints are too limiting, it's not appealing."
This sentiment is echoed by Fallout co-creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, who expressed interest in a Fallout: New Vegas remaster last year. Cain highlighted the necessity of innovative elements, explaining, "Every RPG I've ever made offered me something new and different…If someone came to me and said, 'You want to make a Fallout game?' My answer is 'Well, what's new?'"
Obsidian's Perspective
Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart also shared his desire to work on another Fallout game, should the opportunity arise. However, as of January 2023, he confirmed that no such project was underway, citing Obsidian's busy schedule with Avowed, Grounded, and Outer Worlds 2. While he expressed hope for a future Fallout collaboration, he acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding its timing.
In essence, the desire to return to the Fallout universe is present among many talented developers. The key obstacle remains the need for a fresh, innovative approach that allows these creators to explore uncharted territory within the beloved franchise.
