Dr Disrespect, the popular streamer known as Herschel "Guy" Beahm IV, has acknowledged sending inappropriate messages to an underage individual, confirming the reason behind his 2020 Twitch ban. This revelation, following years of speculation, sheds light on his abrupt departure from the platform.
The four-year anniversary of his ban falls on June 26th. Beahm initially sued Twitch (owned by Amazon) before settling in early 2022. Former Twitch employee Cody Conners recently alleged on Twitter that the ban stemmed from "sexting a minor" via Twitch Whispers, a now-defunct private messaging feature.
Admission of Inappropriate Conduct
Initially denying wrongdoing, Dr Disrespect later issued a lengthy statement admitting to inappropriate conversations with a minor via Twitch Whispers in 2017, three years prior to his ban. He described the messages as "inappropriate" but insisted there were no harmful intentions and no in-person meetings occurred. This directly counters Conners' claim that the messages aimed to arrange a meeting at TwitchCon. His statement garnered nearly 11 million views in under 90 minutes. He faced criticism for initially omitting the word "minor" from his tweet, later correcting the omission.
Departure from Midnight Society
The statement also addressed his departure from Midnight Society, the game development studio he co-founded. The studio announced the termination of their relationship on June 24th, citing a need to uphold its principles. Dr Disrespect, however, characterized the decision as a mutual one, expressing regret and apologizing to his team, community, and family.
Return to Streaming
Dr Disrespect announced an "extended" break from streaming, clarifying it as temporary. He expressed relief at having addressed the situation and rejected the "predator" label some have applied to him.
