CD Projekt Red has confirmed that development on Cyberpunk 2, the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, has officially begun pre-production. The announcement came alongside financial results revealing the Phantom Liberty expansion surpassed 10 million copies sold.
Currently, 96 of CD Projekt's 730 developers are assigned to Cyberpunk 2 (codenamed Orion), with the majority (422) working on The Witcher 4. While both projects appear to be early in development, this marks the first official confirmation of Cyberpunk 2's production status.
New Details Emerge About Cyberpunk Sequel
Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith recently shared insights about Orion during Digital Dragons 2025. While less involved than with Cyberpunk 2077 (which sold 30 million copies), Pondsmith confirmed he's reviewing scripts and consulting on design elements.
"I was touring departments last week," Pondsmith recounted. "They'd show me new cyberware designs asking 'What do you think?' and I'd provide feedback on what worked."
Most intriguingly, Pondsmith revealed the sequel will feature both Night City and an entirely new metropolis. Describing the additional location, he said: "It doesn't feel like Blade Runner - more like Chicago gone wrong," clarifying this references atmosphere rather than literal location.
The studio hasn't confirmed whether this means:
- A completely separate city alongside Night City
- An expanded version of Night City with new districts
- How much of each location will be explorable
CD Projekt's Packed Development Pipeline
The Polish studio currently has multiple major projects underway:

Other CD Projekt initiatives include:
- A new Cyberpunk anime following Cyberpunk: Edgerunners' success
- Cyberpunk 2077's upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 release
- The Witcher 4 (Polaris) in active development
While details remain scarce, the confirmation of Cyberpunk 2's pre-production shows CD Projekt's long-term commitment to the franchise following Cyberpunk 2077's redemption arc.
