Sandfall Interactive recently unveiled key details about Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 during Xbox's Developer Direct, including the release date, character roster, and innovative combat system. Let's delve into the exciting news!
April 2025 Launch Date Confirmed
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, set in a Belle Epoque France-inspired fantasy world, will launch on April 24, 2025. This announcement, made during the Xbox Developer Direct, also confirmed day-one availability on Xbox Game Pass.
Pre-orders are open! The standard edition is priced at $44.99, while the Deluxe Edition is available for $59.99 on the Xbox Store. Steam and PS5 players enjoy a 10% discount, bringing the prices down to $44.99 and $53.99 respectively. Note that the Steam discount ends May 2nd, 2025, and the PlayStation discount (valid until release at 3:00 PM local time) requires a PlayStation Plus subscription. The game is currently wishlisted on the Epic Games Store.
Meet Monoco and Esquie: New Expedition Members
The full character roster has been revealed, featuring seven playable characters and one dedicated to exploration. Joining the expedition are:
- Monoco: A friendly yet bloodthirsty Gestral, capable of transforming into defeated enemies, leveraging their powers in combat. Gestrals are uniquely immune to the Paintress's influence.
- Esquie: A legendary being, considered the oldest and strongest in the world. While not directly involved in combat, Esquie unlocks access to various locations on the open-world map. Collecting his special stones grants the party new abilities and access to previously unreachable areas.
The remaining characters – Gustave, Lune, Maelle, Sciel, Renoir, and Verso – were previously introduced in an October 16, 2024 YouTube video.
Innovative Turn-Based Combat and Deep Character Customization
Sandfall Interactive aims for more than just visual appeal. They've reinvented classic turn-based combat, incorporating a reactive system that allows for real-time dodges and parries for increased damage. The difficulty can be adjusted to modify the timing window for these actions.
Deep character customization is a core feature. Each character boasts unique mechanics and skill trees (like Lune's "Stain" accumulation), and evolving "Pictos" (equipment modifiers) into Luminas (permanent passive effects) after four battles provides further customization options. This allows for hundreds of build variations.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 promises a compelling blend of strategic turn-based combat and deep character customization, offering a fresh and engaging experience for RPG fans.
