As Overwatch 2 gears up for 2025, the game is set to undergo transformative changes that will redefine its core gameplay. With nearly nine years since the original Overwatch launched in 2016 and two-and-a-half years since the debut of Overwatch 2, Season 15, starting February 18, promises to revolutionize the player experience with the introduction of hero perks.
Blizzard's game director Aaron Keller, alongside his team, has unveiled a comprehensive roadmap for Overwatch 2, highlighting new heroes, collaborations, and a fresh approach to gameplay. These updates are designed to rejuvenate interest in Overwatch 2, especially as it competes against formidable rivals like NetEase's Marvel Rivals.
Overwatch 2 is Adding Hero Perks
A significant shift in gameplay dynamics comes with the introduction of hero perks. Each hero will now have the option to choose two types of perks—minor and major—as they progress through levels during a match. For instance, at level two, players can enhance a basic aspect of their hero with a minor perk, such as Orisa's primary fire refunding Heat on critical hits. More dramatically, a major perk can transform the hero mid-match, like swapping Orisa's Javelin Spin for her Barrier or making her Energy Javelin chargeable with increased speed, knockback, and the ability to pierce enemies.
These levels are distributed throughout the match, leading to what lead gameplay designer Alec Dawson calls "gameplay-shifting" alterations. Players face a strategic decision, as selecting one perk means forgoing the other, a mechanic reminiscent of talent choices in Blizzard's Heroes of the Storm.

Stadium is a New Round-Based Mode, with Third-Person
Season 16, slated for April, brings another major update with the introduction of Stadium mode. Described by Keller as the "biggest game mode" since Overwatch's inception, Stadium is a 5v5, best-of-7 round-based competitive mode. Players will earn and spend currency between rounds to enhance their heroes, boosting attributes like survivability or damage, or unlocking significant hero alterations, such as Reaper gaining flight in his Wraith Form. Although perks are not included in Stadium initially, their future integration remains a possibility.
Stadium mode also introduces a third-person perspective, allowing players to see more of the battlefield and their hero modifications in action. Players can switch between first and third-person views, adding a new layer of strategic depth. Stadium will launch with 14 heroes, with plans for more heroes, maps, and modes to be added over time.

GOATs are Coming to Overwatch Classic
Blizzard continues to innovate with new play modes, including 6v6 and Overwatch Classic. More events are planned, and a 6v6 competitive open queue with a maximum of two tanks per team is set to launch. For fans of the original Overwatch's GOATs Meta, Overwatch Classic will revive the three-tank, three-support strategy midway through Season 16. Additionally, seasonal events like April Fools', Summer Games, and Dr. Junkenstein's Halloween event are on the calendar.
Freja Arrives in Season 16 - and Aqua Follows
Season 16 will introduce a new hero, Freja, a crossbow-wielding bounty hunter from Denmark capable of using explosive bolts and bolas to control the battlefield. Alongside Freja, Blizzard teased concept art for their next hero, Aqua, wielding an ornate staff and manipulating water, with more details to be revealed later in the year.

Loot Boxes are Back
Blizzard is bringing back the iconic loot boxes to Overwatch 2, but with a twist. These will be available only through free means, such as the free track of the battle pass and weekly rewards. Players will also see the odds of what's inside each box before opening, ensuring transparency and fun, as stated by senior systems designer Gavin Winter.
Hero Bans, Map Voting, and More are Coming to Competitive Play
Competitive play in Overwatch 2 is set for major updates starting with Season 15, which will reset competitive ranks. New rewards like Galactic weapon skins and special weapon charms are incentives for players to climb back up the ranks. Hero portraits will also feature rank icons once more.
Season 16 will introduce hero bans to competitive play, a feature common in many competitive games to diversify strategies. Following the implementation of hero bans, map voting will be added, further enhancing the competitive experience.
