Nintendo's Switch 2 Reveal: A Stock Surge and a Director's Ire
Nintendo's stock price soared following the Switch 2 announcement, while game director Hideki Kamiya unleashed a torrent of criticism towards those responsible for pre-release leaks. This article delves into the financial impact of the reveal and Kamiya's outspoken reaction.
A Positive Market Response to the Switch 2
As reported by Kantan Games CEO Serkan Toto in a January 16, 2025 VGC interview, Nintendo's share price experienced a significant boost after the Switch 2 unveiling. Despite prior leaks, the anticipation surrounding the new console propelled the company's market valuation to new heights, peaking at $15.77 USD – a considerable increase from the 2024 average of around $13 USD.
Toto attributes this surge to investor relief, stating that fears of a repeat of the Wii U's underperformance, due to perceived over-innovation, have been alleviated. The Switch 2's iterative design, reminiscent of an iPhone update, appears to have satisfied investor expectations. While some fans express dissatisfaction with the name and design, the clear identification as Nintendo's new console mitigates the risk of a Wii U-like failure.
However, Toto acknowledges that the pre-release leaks diminished the impact of the official reveal, stating that the announcement lacked the surprise element of the original Switch launch in 2016. The April 2nd Nintendo Direct is expected to provide more substantial details.
Kamiya's Outrage Over Leaks
Following the announcement, renowned game director Hideki Kamiya took to Twitter (X) to express his intense frustration with the Switch 2 leaks. He issued a strongly worded curse upon the leakers, highlighting the contrast with the successful surprise reveal of Okami at The Game Awards. Kamiya believes the leaks, driven by the leakers' "own pleasure and self-satisfaction," significantly hampered Nintendo's post-announcement opportunities.
Former Nintendo of America employees Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang corroborated Kamiya's sentiments in a YouTube video, confirming Nintendo's extreme displeasure with the leaks and their disruptive impact.
The Enigmatic "C" Button
The Switch 2 leaks have generated much speculation, particularly regarding a mysterious "C" button on the right Joy-Con. Two main theories prevail: communication functionality and mouse controls.
The "Campus" theory suggests the button facilitates communication features for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, including group chat, voice chat, and screen sharing. Alternatively, the mouse control theory proposes the button transforms the right Joy-Con into a mouse, enhancing gameplay for titles like first-person shooters. The official specifications and functionality remain undisclosed pending the April 2nd Direct.
The upcoming Nintendo Direct will undoubtedly shed light on these and other aspects of the highly anticipated Switch 2.
