Collision Investigators' Tool: EDR "Black Box" Scan and PDF Reports
Investigating vehicle collisions requires efficient data acquisition. The CrashScan app, used with an OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth adapter, scans vehicle computer modules, including the Event Data Recorder (EDR) or "black box," where supported (see support details below). CrashScan helps investigators identify, retrieve, and interpret accident data stored within the vehicle's systems. This data is valuable for verifying insurance claims and providing crucial indicators for liability assessments in questionable collision scenarios.
Vehicle Compatibility (EDR & Full System Diagnostics)
CrashScan supports over 3000 unique vehicle year/make/model combinations globally. Check compatibility here:

Comprehensive Accident Reports
Successful CrashScan reports detail impact severity, orientation (front, rear, or side), and provide crucial contextual information, such as:
- Accident severity (minor, moderate, or severe)
- EDR trigger thresholds
- 5 seconds of pre-crash data (speed, brake/accelerator pedal use, steering)
- Number of occupants and seatbelt usage
- Estimated repair cost ($)
- Likelihood of structural crush damage
- Injury risk thresholds (whiplash, injury duration)
- G-force context compared to daily activities
*Injury risk algorithms utilize stored acceleration values, scientific literature, and databases like the National Automotive Sampling System (NASS).

Legal Considerations: EDR Data and Privacy
Canada: Currently lacks specific legislation; EDR data is considered diagnostic and not private. However, obtaining consent from insurers is a best practice.
United States: The federal Driver Privacy Act of 2015 and statutes in seventeen states (Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington) govern EDR data access. Generally, downloading EDR data requires the vehicle owner's or policyholder's consent, with exceptions.
End-User Consent
Downloading the CrashScan app (published by Collision Sciences, Inc.) implies consent to its installation, future updates, and data collection practices. Consent can be withdrawn by uninstalling the app. The app may communicate with Collision Sciences' servers for functionality and usage metrics recording, potentially affecting app preferences or data on your device.
