LEGO Lord of the Rings: Building the Shire, Start of Epic Quest

Author : Logan Update:May 24,2025

LEGO enthusiasts and fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's masterpiece can rejoice as the third installment in the Lord of the Rings series, "The Lord of the Rings: The Shire," is set to launch on April 2 for LEGO Insiders and April 5 for the general public. Following the impressive releases of the 6,167-piece Rivendell in 2023 and the 5,471-piece Barad-dûr in 2024, The Shire promises to capture the essence of the beloved hobbit homeland with its own unique charm.

The new 2,017-piece set offers a detailed rendition of Bilbo Baggins' hobbit-hole, perfect for the celebration of his "eleventy-first" birthday. The warmth of The Shire is evident in every rounded wall and curved surface, adorned with a plethora of accessories. While the set's charm is undeniable, its price point raises questions about its value relative to the piece count.

Set #10354 meticulously recreates Bilbo's home, featuring nine minifigures including Bilbo Baggins, Frodo, Mrs. Proudfoot, Farmer Proudfoot, Merry, Pippin, Rosie Cotton, Samwise Gamgee, and Gandalf the Grey. The hobbit-hole, nestled into a green-bricked hillside, is designed with an open back to showcase three distinct rooms: the main foyer, a study, and a dining and sitting area. These rooms are built separately and connected using clamps, ensuring a seamless exterior while maintaining a cozy interior.

The set captures the essence of Bilbo's home with detailed touches such as patterned rugs, letters from well-wishers, and an array of food items scattered throughout. Notable artifacts from Bilbo's adventures include the Mithril Coat and a well-worn map from his journey to the Lonely Mountain. A unique feature is the fireplace, utilizing LEGO Technic to switch the display between a charred envelope and the One Ring, echoing a pivotal moment from "The Fellowship of the Ring."

The construction of the interiors is straightforward, while the exterior demands more attention to achieve the natural curves of the hillside. The tactile experience of building the set is reminiscent of running one's hand over a globe, feeling the relief of the terrain. The design emphasizes the integration of hobbits with their environment, highlighted by a tree crowning Bag End.

Additional elements like a birthday cake, Party Tree with lanterns, a tent, and a dragon firework enhance the set's playability, allowing for scene recreation from the films. Gandalf's horse-drawn carriage and a barrel mechanism that makes Bilbo "disappear" add to the interactive experience.

Despite its simplicity, which aligns well with the hobbit lifestyle, The Shire set comes with a steep price tag of $270 for 2,017 pieces. This is 34% above the typical 10 cents per brick metric, making it less of a bargain compared to other LEGO sets like the Rivendell and Barad-dûr. While LEGO Star Wars sets often have higher markups due to licensing, The Shire's pricing seems disproportionate.

For Lord of the Rings fans looking for an entry point, The Shire remains the most affordable option among the three sets. However, the pricing strategy raises questions about LEGO's reliance on brand goodwill and the sustained demand for Lord of the Rings merchandise.

The set, while lovely to look at, challenges the traditional value assessment based on piece count. LEGO The Lord of the Rings: The Shire, Set #10354, retails for $269.99 and is available at the LEGO Store starting April 2 for LEGO Insiders and April 5 for the general public.
