Sega Trademarks Ecco The Dolphin, Fueling Rumors Of The Series’ Comeback

In an exciting development for fans of classic gaming, Sega has rekindled hopes for the revival of the beloved Ecco the Dolphin franchise. The company filed trademarks for both "Ecco" and "Ecco the Dolphin" in late December of last year, sparking speculation about the potential return of this long-dormant IP.

Ecco The Dolphin Returns

As reported by Gematsu, the trademarks were filed on December 27th, 2024, and the news broke today, stirring excitement among gamers. Ecco the Dolphin, first launched in 1992, was developed by the Hungarian studio Appaloosa Interactive (formerly Novotrade International) and published by Sega. The game follows the adventures of Ecco, a bottlenose dolphin, as he battles extraterrestrial threats to save the planet. The series saw four more installments up to the year 2000, with a planned sequel, Ecco II: Sentinels of the Universe, unfortunately being canceled due to the decline of the Sega Dreamcast.

Today, Sega stands as a prominent game developer and publisher, whereas Appaloosa Interactive ceased operations in the mid-2000s. Despite this, former staff members, including Ecco's creator Ed Annunziata, remain active in the industry. Annunziata, who released Space War Arena in 2019, expressed his ongoing desire for an Ecco sequel in a 2019 interview with NintendoLife, stating, "One thing I can say is in the future, people are playing this game. I never give up!"

While no further details have emerged about the future of Ecco the Dolphin, fans are encouraged to stay tuned for more updates. Sega has been actively reviving and developing numerous classic and new IPs in recent years, including Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Shinobi, Virtua Fighter, the mysterious Project Century, and a new "RPG-like" Virtua Fighter. Ecco the Dolphin could soon join this impressive lineup, promising exciting prospects for its dedicated fanbase.
