ScratchJr: Unleash Your Child's Creativity Through Coding (Ages 5-7)
ScratchJr is a user-friendly programming language designed for young children (ages 5 and up) to create interactive stories and games. Kids use colorful blocks to program characters, making them move, jump, dance, and sing. They can personalize characters with a built-in paint editor, add their own voices and sounds, and even include photos – bringing their creations to life.
Inspired by the popular Scratch programming language, ScratchJr simplifies the interface and coding for younger learners, carefully aligning features with children's developmental stages.
We believe coding is a fundamental skill, similar to reading and writing. It helps children organize their thoughts and express ideas creatively. ScratchJr empowers children to become creators, not just consumers, of technology. Through coding, they develop problem-solving skills, project design abilities, and crucial sequencing skills vital for academic success. Math and language are integrated naturally, enhancing numeracy and literacy development. Learning to code becomes a powerful tool for learning itself.
ScratchJr is a collaborative project involving Tufts University, the MIT Media Lab, and the Playful Invention Company, with Two Sigma contributing to the Android version. HvingtQuatre Company and Sarah Thomson created the app's visuals.
