Nonograms, also known as Hanjie, Griddlers, Picross, Japanese Crosswords, Japanese Puzzles, Pic-a-Pix, and "Paint by Numbers," among other names, are captivating picture logic puzzles. In these puzzles, you color or leave blank cells in a grid according to numbers at the side, revealing a hidden picture. These numbers represent discrete tomography, indicating how many unbroken lines of filled squares exist in any given row or column. For instance, a clue like "4 8 3" signifies sets of four, eight, and three filled squares, respectively, with at least one blank square between successive groups.
To solve a Nonogram, you must determine which cells to fill with boxes and which to leave as empty spaces. Identifying spaces is just as crucial as filling boxes, as spaces later help in determining where a clue (a continuous block of boxes corresponding to a number in the legend) may extend. Solvers typically use a dot or a cross to mark cells they are certain are spaces.
Guessing is a no-go in Nonograms. Only cells determined by logic should be filled. A single error from guessing can spread across the entire puzzle, ruining the solution.
