Zack Snyder has confirmed he’s stepping away from the Rebel Moon universe for the time being to focus on other creative ventures.
The Star Wars-inspired sci-fi epic Rebel Moon premiered on Netflix in December 2023 with significant anticipation. Set in a galaxy dominated by the authoritarian Motherworld and its ruthless military force, the Imperium, the story follows a group of rebels defending a peaceful village on the moon Veldt. The film promised a grand space saga, but critical reception was underwhelming. IGN’s review awarded it a 4/10, criticizing it for a derivative script, lackluster action, and a shallow narrative: "Zack Snyder's space opera is let down by a derivative patchwork script, mediocre action sequences, and a superficial story."
Its sequel, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, arrived in April 2024 and faced similar critiques—also earning a 4/10 from IGN. The review noted, "The second part of Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon space opera, The Scargiver, delivers a half-baked conclusion to a well-trodden story with flimsy character studies and lacklustre action." However, R-rated director’s cuts of both films, released later in 2024, were met with more favorable responses, offering deeper insight into Snyder’s original vision.
In a recent interview with Variety, Snyder revealed his current shift in focus: “I got sidetracked into this — not sidetracked, it’s all uptown problems, as they say — for Netflix, I’m working on an LAPD SWAT movie,” he said. “So I was like, OK, well, I’m gonna just sort of let that Rebel Moon world boil for a minute, and I’m gonna go do this.”
Known for his work on the DC Universe, including Man of Steel, Snyder also opened up about the challenges of managing two major projects at once. “Frankly, it was a very exhausting, long process doing the two movies together. So it was nice to have a bit of a break from it,” he explained. “I love it like crazy, but it’s nice to have a bit of a break. So yeah, we’ll see after I finish this, when I come back, where we are with everything.”
While Snyder remained noncommittal about future installments, he emphasized the vast storytelling potential within the Rebel Moon universe. “There’s tons of stories. So, I mean, I think it’s literally, it’s endless,” he said. “But, again, like I say, I’m waiting to see how we want to and in what way we would move forward, if at all.”
Despite the hiatus, the Rebel Moon saga continues to expand. A video game spinoff titled Blood Line is now in development, set within the same universe—further proving that, even on pause, the franchise still holds momentum.
